Here, in Australia, gliding is controlled by GFA, who loosely answer to CASA (general aviation authorities). GFA sets the rules for registration and operation of all gliders. I'm not sure on the registration procedures but on the operation the following applies. 1. Be a member of a gliding club and GFA (can't be a member of GFA with out a club) annual fees of $300 to $500. [Done and still current, flying a comp this easter in a club glider -) ] 2. Train up to a Sliver "C" badge. [Done] 3. Get an independent operators endorsement. [Done] 4. Get a "form 2" endorsement to be able to work on your aircraft. [75% there] (of which there are 3 levels) I imagine that I couldn't build a motorglider in Australia without the "form 2" endorsement. I gave up the dream of a motorglider because there is no club in my area and it all got to difficult, tied up with red tape. So here I am with a KR2 operated as an ultralight, no red tape, in fact the AUF (Australian Ultralight Federation) has made the transition from gliding simple and have been very helpful. One of the main uses for my KR2 will be transport to the nearest gliding club, 500km away. :-) Regards Barry Kruyssen Cairns, Australia AUF 19-3873 kr2@BigPond.com http://users.tpg.com.au/barryk/KR2.htm > > Mark-- "what defines whether an aircraft is a motorglider or not?" > > Hey all. OK, gang it's time to call a horse by it's color. Capps, and I didn't use the term Mr., is the one who consistantly rediculed me for posting anything, and I mean anything, that might me advantageous to KR builders. It got to the point where I had to block his private emails. This is the same Capps of whom I extended a vast amount of time and knowledge in his legal pursuit of remedy in his acquisition of the KR Newsletter. I guess my thinking was, if you believe Capps my thoughts are totally off base, there are multiple ways to do things. Take for example pushrods and a parts list. Incorporating some building examples into the KR, that were devised post KR "engineering", just might be of value to current KR builders. Course, according to Capps, I may be so full of it I'm choking on it. Never said I was perfect. Here's the deal Capps...................you win. Next time someone wants to know how you attached your seat bottoms, how you avoided the binding of the aileron brackets, where and at what angle you drilled the forward VS stab spar for cable penetration, you got it. Spent = yesterday and today finishing the wings install and detail inspection of = these areas and noticed several bolts mounted in rotational areas, = aileron bellcrank and connections, that had self locking nuts instead of = castle nuts with cotter pins or safety wire installed. I don't know how = many are familiar, but this is a major no no. All rotational attach = points need to be either finish installed with safety wire or cotter = pins, or in some cases both. So I spent the day drilling and then = re-fitting these attach bolts to the aileron control. Tomorrow (later = today) I will remove the bellcrank pivot bolts and give them the same = treatment. Who-ever suggested buying extra bolts each time you order = what you need, I think this was Mark Jones, thank you. These "extra" = bolts have come in handy lately as I finish these final steps. I am = also re-building the left brake caliper which developed a leak after a = year of sitting in the garage ( thank you Larry Flesner for the = directions ). I should have it re-installed later today as well. I will = also be verifying the accuracy of my altimeter tomorrow and if not = within 100 feet ( IFR requires no more than 75 feet off as a maximum = tolerance reference ) then I will have it calibrated at the avionics = shop. Once I have the aileron bolts corrected I will install the trim = strips that came with the airplane. I have tested the wingtip 3 way = lights and all work good, so I will be going for day & night VFR = certification. I will also have the local avionics shop set the Mode C = to the altimeter, so they match. I will try to get some pictures sent = to Dan for the site soon. Later this week I will be painting the wheel = pants and working out the mounting for the brake covers, then painting = them also. These I will install once testing is over with and I am sure = I will not tear them up, HaHa! Getting closer..... If we wish to keep them together, we must swiftly move away from anything that will harm this fraternity. = Some netters are invaluable to the net, others are not - the ratio of valid answers given vs. questions asked is thin - why are we alienating those few that can (and regularly do) provide the answers? = Home built aircraft are all about affordability - and affordability is relative, it means different things to different people. = Ken Rand provided the unique opportunity to address the widest possible definition of affordability and then still present something that looks (and performs) like it should cost a great deal more. = Obviously, it can cost a lot more if that is what grabs you - some folks have a panel that cost more than the next guys entire airplane - that is what this is all about - you pays your money and you ....., whatever makes you happy. The point is - the KR is still probably the most affordable DIY airplane for what it offers. That takes nothing away from the many other top class designs /kits that are around - many offer an even bigger bang (for a bigger buck). = The KR design /construction (and the potential for tweaking), is what makes it one of the most popular HB airplanes ever - HOW CAN THIS STRENGTH POSSIBLY BECOME ITS WEAKNESS - a wedge threatening to divide a unique collection of different people, with different back grounds, different skills, different aspirations and different bank balances - a collection of folks that share one thing - the desire to fly. There is NO DOUBT AT ALL that the fundamental KR1 /KR2 /KR2S design is very real and the plans are complete and adequate - they CAN all build into a superb little airplane. Anything - even a surf board can be built weak, crooked and overweight - I bet the KRnet has already prevented that many times. Simple fact is - airplanes are the best possible demonstration of the word compromise - so many things to balance - payload /HP /Wing loading /speed(s) /stability /range /G limits /comfort /mission capability / building costs /operating costs et al. For some of us the KR then becomes more of a philosophy. Ken did not invent spruce, ply, dynel, epoxy and design principles - he just showed us another effective way to hang them all together.
