But I will be off the net for several days due to emergency response to Hurricane Frances. We are being called in so I have to go this morning and pack in the airplane and bring it home to the safety of the garage. I found lots of minor damage upon close inspection, along with a fairly smashed in spinner due to flying debris due to Hurricane Charley. Several holes in the wings have to be patched, so I am not taking any chances with Hurricane Frances but bringing her home for alittle bit. As if the delay in the inspections were not enough, now this! Gentlemen it is going to be a helluva day when she finally does fly! Have to spend the weekend at the Communications Center to keep Emergency Response Units going for the people. If one of yall sees me flying by at low altitude, give the boys at the Gathering a pirep as this thing might blow me there! I'm not sure if he ever saw it. I removed the aft deck so he could see everything, and then yanked the cowling off. Pulling aft deck and cowling involves the grand effort of pulling out 6 hinge pins and five screws on the top of the cowling, but I didn't have the screws installed. He didn't look at my wiring much, but commented that it sure was nice to have that kind of access. He said even the big boys would kill for that kind of access. It does make a huge difference in quality of work when you can do whatever you want back there. I guess I should post a picture of that area soon. He looked at my wings, commented on my aileron and flap hinges, and liked my split flap logic. He seemed happy enough with the appearance, but placarding was the big deal. I've heard that the logic is that I know that plane inside and out, but if I ever sell it to anybody, the buyer needs a clue as to which switches do what. As far as paperwork goes, I just called the FSDO and they sent me the standard homebuilder's paperwork package and a set of instructions. I had to look somewhere on the web for some REAL instructions, but it was really only a few lines on a few forms. Not a big deal. After I had that in hand, I called the DAR and he said "send it to me so I can get my ducks in a row", so he showed up with everything done. The sum total of my paperwork yesterday was to sign my name twice! Again, I really didn't call him and tell him I was ready...he was coming up here to do two other inspections, and added me to the list. I'd been telling him all day that I wasn't ready, but he kept saying "we'll see what we've got". He's an older guy who built his first Pitts in the 60's (and still flys it), and now restores museum pieces at the museum in Birmingham. I told him I'd fly down to see him soon... I'll make them available at one of the forums. Mark, e-mail me or bring along those web sites you used. The one IMPORTANT item I found on the paperwork (that the FAA nearly screwed up) was to list the KR as a "PLANS BUILT" , not a "KIT". When listed as a kit I believe they will want to see a "bill of sale". The paperwork is one area where you will want to work closely with the DAR and give yourself plenty of time. He explained that his point was that even though he has a 13 gallon header tank and 18 gallons in his wings, he rarely (or barely) has to retrim the airplane, even though speed may range between 120 and 170 mph. He says between takeoff and landing, he usually only moves the trim tab only about an eighth of an inch. He considers that a huge improvement over his old KR2. Thanks Rich for that tid bit of info. This is exactly where I am at today. My run today was great. After Marks great inspection yesterday, I got determined to solve my power problems, so I sat thinking of how to enrich my Revflow without adding a fuel pump. I came to the conclusion that the gas was not coming out of the carb. I reasoned that the straight taper cut of the revflow needle was not going to feed the engine at WOT and at idle/midrange. I decided to create a WOT step down over the last half an inch or so. I went to the hanger early 8AM and ground the step and put it back in the Revflow. Presto, 3500 RPM and 40 MP. Though I have tremendous power now, I feel that the engine is at minimum running Peek EGT, and not rich of peek as I would like to see. Well, 3500 and 40 is more then I want static and now I can finally use some of the variable pitch in the IVO prop. Before I repitch the prop, I need to know if any one with a turbo with a controllable waste gate is making enough power to need the gate and what will happen as the altitude goes up. Tomorrow it's back to fixing the things on the list and trying to find a good vernier cable locally. With a little luck, it will cost less than $100 + a new prop, but one landing dear was laying on its side attached only by the UNI glass at the top of the canard. I am probably going to pull the engine and go up to Revmaster, though one has never failed under the conditions of the crash. It was my fault. Hi speed taxiing led me to believe that my header tank would feed properly, so I did not put in a forward facing vent. Tank vacuum caused a power loss right at take-off. To make matters worse, I worried too much about the end of the runway and allowed the plane to go into the weeds. Even a ground loop on the runway would have caused less damage.
