The real answer is, for me, "any way you can". Steve Bennett sells a little packet of templates that work very well, but I don't remember if he says anything about how to attach it. In 13 more days, you can see for yourself and shortly after that, I will be pondering the same question all over again, so I guess I better pay attention. I will bring them to the Gathering if anyone is interested. They are truly a work of art, CNC machined with a nickal fused lining. Haven't started my engine assembly yet because I am sending parts out to be ceramic coated. I found out it is Polyisocyanurate Foam under the brand name of "NilFram", which is in the urethane family. From what I have read up on this on the internet, "Polyiso" is the next generation polyurethane and the major difference is Polyiso has better flame retardant characteristics. It's 2.2 pound density, which adds a little weight, but I can get it whenever I need it, in whatever size, less expensive, and without shipping. Here is the brochure on it that he gave me: http://www.geocities.com/djramccoop1/NilFram_Brochure.pdf Also, it sands and shapes identical to the polyurethane I got from Wicks. I welcome any feedback on this. Frankly I am confident in using either polystyrene or polyurethane foam in places like the tail feathers and turtledecks. What I am concerned about is using polystyrene foam in places that will be holding fuel (my wings) and this is where all the replies to my post went a little astray. Whether we use open cell, closed cell or what ever it is all useless if the wing skin cores dissappear at the first whiff of fuel. This week I did a test with a piece of polystyrene and a piece of polyurethane foam, squeegied micro into the polyurethane and straight resin on the polystyrene.Squeegied a piece of 600 gram BID glass into contact and left to cure for a day. The results show little difference in the force required to seperate the glass from both foams. If anything, I am now in favour of the polyurethane simply for the ease of shaping and the truer, stiffer product obtained by sanding. If this foam I have is the same as what you are using over there, I will be building my wings out of it. Now to convince the inspector. Once again guys, thanks. First of all I noted that the hole in the head designed for the installation of the factory CHT probe is located on the just about where my second spark plug is located. If this head were located on the bank with the #3 cylinder, the would be roughly above the #3 intake port. Since I had 4 cylinder CHT, I removed the number 2 and 4 probes and relocated them. The number 4 probe is now located on the head bolt which is closest to the #3 exhaust. and the #2 probe is now located on the head bolt just below the #2 intake on the head bolt. The number one and three plugs still have their senders in place. There is a big difference in the temp at that #3 head bolt as compared to the temp at the #3 spark plug. Near the end of a 5 minute run at full power, the plug mounted probe read 525 and the #3 head bolt mounted probe read 375. I made a few other mods today in an effort to reduce heat. I wrapped the turbo and part of the exhaust pipes. I also moved the induction pipe between the turbo and the splitter going to the left and right manifolds. This was done in an effort to lift the pipe up away from the heat of the #3 cylinder and to allow better air flow under it and around the #3 head. Tomorrow I will make permanent mounts for the fuel pump, regulator and wiring and install a switch. I will operate the pump during take off and anytime where I will use WOT and or full boost. Perhaps by tomorrow evening I will be back in the air.
