Bob Muse Sr. was also quite successful with his for many years. I remember vividly the time he came to see me to give me a ride in it. I was getting close to flying mine and he came for a visit. I was watching him come in on final and when he got close to the runway the plane slid over to the left and took out a runway light, his prop, and a few other things. His throttle cable had gotten stuck somewhere between flying and landing and he was working so hard to get it to work that he forgot to put the gear down until it was too late, then tried to put it down and lost control of the plane. Well, we patched it up and he flew home the next day on a prop that Gladys send him on the bus. I also have many stories about the stock retract that I will not waste your time with today and if there is anyone out there who needs some parts, I have most of two gear assemblies left which I will send to you for the price of shipping and one spring bar. I have been using the aluminum off of one of them for making parts. "There is a time for building and a time for FLYING, and the time for building has long since expired." See you in Mt. How long can they be? I guess that is up to you. We are installing a 3" on a GPASC 2180 with a force 1 hub. I talked to Richard S. about that at the gathering because his is 1.5" ( I think ). He said that with the 3", we better not be doing a lot of high G maneuvers, so I am taking that to mean that we are at the limit or maybe a little over the limit in length. You need to decide what you want it to accomplish and then go to the minimum length that will accomplish that goal. We need to be able to get past the exhaust pipes. If you are like Richard Shirley, you can build one. If you are like me, you can't. If you decide that you need one, let me know and I will get Jerry to tell you where we got ours. The price was right. Sorry for the delay in responding, but my ISP flaked out on me for a couple of days. I never had a problem with any part of my retracks but it all depends on the TLC one gives it when constructing and never had an incident with the gear, that's also why flaps instead of a belly board, all worked as designed and for an old ATP I knew what I wanted in my KR. I had been flying it in my mind years before I built it. Had mechanical brakes but don't need them anyway even on the big a/c plan your movements before they happen, only used for stopping, that's why I was always easy on tires on any aircraft. Like myself, Dan Heath and several other builders have repeatedly said the thing to do is analyze what the mission of your aircraft is and then build it to that. Changing the mission mid stream means lots of rework usually, but always more time than we think it will take. Retracts are cool, and are on over half the aircraft I have flown. I have also been a CFI long enough to be in the cockpit and watch several students get into circumstances where things began to escalate in the pattern, other aircraft changing position etc..., minor situation happen, runway assignment change at the last minute, and the student suddenly focus on the new stuff, and omitt the gear down. The pattern behavior was altered and so was the habit. My observation with this list has been that most builders including me wnat a fun plane that is fairly relaxing to fly, economical to operate, dependable for more frequent and safe use, and something most any pilot can easily transition into. It is amazing how many pilots have a total mental melt down during an emergency and things like the gear, flaps, prop control, get omitted. Just the stress of taking a checkride makes alot of them mess up! The pilot who simply had a manual wastegate on his turbo that wrote into the list and said the pilot had to do an unexpected go-around and forgot to open the wastegate, blowing the head gaskets, is a perfect example of this kind of accidental work overload. With most of us wanting to have a relaxing flight, it is hard enough to take a plane that you are low hour in, get used to landing it, and still enjoy the ride, without feeling like it is too much work. Keeping it simple means you are flying sooner, have less to worry about, and transition better. For those who are building for the first time, OR do not have alot of hours in complex aircraft with retracts, this should be your primary considerations. I have over 300 hours in complex aircraft out of the 1500 hours that I have flown and when I want to work and get paid to fly, okay; but when I want to relax and just fly for fun, I want to pay attention to the flight, not get obsorbed in procedures necessary to stay safe. It is your choice, but don't get inticed by the glitter if it doesn't match your skill level, or you don't plan on flying enough to stay MORE than current with it. Just like you did when you considered which aircraft to build, fixed or retracts is also a part of that decision process. Happy & SAFE flying.... And the fixed gear makes sence. And that is exactly why I like the KR's so much, and the Experimental designation so well. That's why you'll see both fixed gear and retracts on these planes. I believe that the design I have made for the gear and the ClamShell's will make the gear easy to build and the speed increase. And yes, it will without question be heavier than the fixed. And the time will increase by about 20 to 25 hrs. But.................................................... and I just like the looks of the retract. Looks like I may not make Mondays planned first flight. Oil pressue, bops back and forth from zero to normal, the warmer the engine gets, the more the gauge tends toward zero. Tried two senders and gauges....type 4, 2 litre '1972 bus engine. Any suggestions out there? It pays to do a lot of taxi testing! Something shows up as weak, unacceptable or down right broken each time I taxi. The first time I brought it out for testing was two years ago. It ran well that day, but during the night a major autumn storm, wind and snow lifted the hanger up in the air turning it upside down and landing in someones back yard 200 yards away. It took with it my nose bowl, half of the cowling and part of my rudder, as well as two feet off of the wings of the SE 5A tied down next to me. Gotta tie those tent hangers down real well! One more question; In some of the fotos of the fly in I saw scat tubeing on one of the carbs. I have a big foam filter on mine and wonder if I am doing the smart thing. ------------------------------ Message: 13 Date: Thu, 7 Oct 2004 13:08:29 -0500 From: "Matt Lansford" Subject: KR> Sport Pilot lecture To: "KRnet" Message-ID: <000401c4ac98$a6d722e0$eed1af18@SPARTICUS> Content-Type: text/plain; format=flowed; charset="iso-8859-1"; reply-type=original Hey all, My A&P school is having an FAA Safety Inspector give a lecture on the new sport pilot rule tomorrow morning. Hmmm, I think he is just hiding out at home and not checking email so he can work. In the 10-11 minutes I sat with him at the Gathering, no fewer that 5 guys asked when he would have his plane flying. Mark's is in Europe to escape our inquiring minds. 346 days left till we all YeeeeeeeHaaaaaa together at the Gathering!!!!!! It's back to building now. It works great, but you do need to be carefull not to over do it. One very important thing to remember is that epoxy dries by heating and it heats up when it dries. The more exoxy you have the more it heats as it dries. Don't heat up a big cup of epoxy very much because the reaction will kick off and just keep getting hotter and hotter. I have had a big cup of EZ Poxy that started out just very warm and a few minutes later was smoking, melting the cup, and hard in five minutes. You need to experiment to see just how muc heat is correct for the amount of epoxy, but the general rule of thumb is you can't heat up a big batch as much as a small one. Brian Kraut Engineering Alternatives, Inc. www.engalt.com -----Original Message----- From: krnet-bounces@mylist.net [mailto:krnet-bounces@mylist.net]On Behalf Of Ron Eason Sent: Wednesday, October 06, 2004 11:32 PM To: KRnet Subject: KR> Thinning epoxy in the winter Some people ask me about this subject. Here is something's to think about. Thinning EpoxyThinning Epoxy Thinning epoxy means lowering its viscosity. Low viscosity epoxy flows better, is easier to roll or brush, and saturates fiberglass fabric quickly. There are two methods of temporarily thinning epoxy. One is to heat the mixture and the other is to add solvent to the mix. The goal of both methods is to reduce the epoxy's viscosity. Laboratory showed that adhesion to lower density wood species like Sitka spruce or Douglas fir, the weak link is the cross grain strength of the wood. It does not matter if the epoxy penetrates 1/4" into the wood or 5/1000". The strength of the wood, the amount of surface area and the adhesive ability of the glue determine the strength of a glue joint. Thinning epoxy with heat Heating the resin/ hardener components and then mixing them together results in a thinned epoxy mixture that, when cured, retains all the characteristics of epoxy cured at room temperature. The viscosity of epoxy is very sensitive to changes in temperature, and warming the components (resin and hardener) and/or the substrate substantially lowers its viscosity. Potential Problems Thinning epoxy with heat can create problems, warm epoxy cures much more quickly than you may be accustomed to. Have things organized before you mix the resin and hardener and move quickly. Use one of the slower hardeners to increase the working time. How warm is warm? You should be able to comfortably touch the substrate or the component containers when they are appropriately warmed, about 115°F maximum. Excessive heat will cause the epoxy to harden too fast, especially in thick applications. Thinning epoxy with solvent Adding solvent is a simple method of thinning epoxy, but unlike heat, the strength and moisture resistance of the cured epoxy are drastically affected. There are a large number of chemicals available to thin epoxy - acetone, lacquer thinner and denatured alcohol are the most commonly available and do a good job of reducing viscosity. For a variety of reasons, "fast evaporating" lacquer thinner appears to be more appropriate for thinning purposes than acetone or alcohol. · Adding 5% lacquer thinner makes about a 60% reduction in viscosity. · Adding 5% lacquer thinner to epoxy reduces the epoxy's compressive strength by 35%. · The addition of more than 5% solvent results in an excessively flexible cured material. · Solvent thinned epoxy cannot be used as structural adhesive. · Adding solvent extends the pot life and cure time and jeopardizes the reliability and predictability of cure. · Adding volatile solvent may cause shrinkage of the cured epoxy. · Applying thinned epoxy in large, confined areas is likely to trap some of the solvent. · Adding solvents alters the color of the cured epoxy. · The solvent used to thin epoxy may damage the substrate. · Solvents may be hazardous to your health and proper ventilation is mandatory. · Adding solvent to epoxy to enhance fiberglass wet-out will result in more "drain out" of the resin on a vertical surface. The fabric will wet-out quickly but it may become resin starved when too much epoxy runs out of the fabric. Does thinning epoxy make sense? In some situations, thinning is appropriate. In most circumstances using heat to thin epoxy is preferred to using solvents. As long as the epoxy does not overheat during cure, the full physical characteristics of the cured epoxy remain. Adding solvent is a quick, simple method of thinning epoxy, but the strength and moisture resistance of the cured epoxy are significantly reduced. So use this method on non-structural applications[such a epoxy microbloon fill] © Gougeon Brothers, Inc. _______________________________________ to UNsubscribe from KRnet, send a message to KRnet-leave@mylist.net please see other KRnet info at http://www.krnet.org/info.html ------------------------------ Message: 24 Date: Thu, 7 Oct 2004 18:02:35 -0600 (MDT) From: "Gene Leone" Subject: Re: KR> 3/16 lomg drill/WAF To: Message-ID: <1392.137.118.244.135.1097193755.squirrel@webmail0.neonova.net> Content-Type: text/plain; charset=iso-8859-1 You can go to any Ace or True Value Hardware store and buy the same bit for a whole lot less. As for drilling the holes, I made the tool from the book and it worked beautifully. Someone else on the KR Net made one out of wood with metal inserts. Both work well.
