I imagine the worse scenario would be the wrong size bearings on the crank and/or cam shaft, and the lesser evil the oil pump itself. Am I correct there? Years ago when I started this project I did send the case and crank to a california shop recomended by other builders. They returned the parts with new bearings to match the machining or mic'ing they did. On second thought, if the oil pressure is normal at start up, the pump would probably be okay? ----- Original Message ----- From: "Orma" To: "KRnet" Sent: Thursday, October 07, 2004 6:40 PM Subject: Re: KR> (no subject) > Tried two senders and gauges > Hello Pat > > If your type 4 has the oil sender mounted just behind the stock oil cooler, > install a tee and then install a direct read pressure gauge and see it > agrees with the electric sender.. > > Orma > Southfield, MI > N110LR celebrating 20 years > Flying, flying and more flying http://www.kr-2.aviation-mechanics.com/ > > > > _______________________________________ > to UNsubscribe from KRnet, send a message to KRnet-leave@mylist.net > please see other KRnet info at http://www.krnet.org/info.html ------------------------------ Message: 3 Date: Fri, 8 Oct 2004 20:21:33 +0200 From: "Eric Evezard" Subject: KR> Drill bits To: "KRnet" Message-ID: <003c01c4ad67$ef87aee0$ccce07c4@r5c9m8> Content-Type: text/plain; charset="iso-8859-1" Hi Dene,as a S African ,let me tell you how I did mine.I learned this method when I built my sailplane many years ago and used the same method on my KR 2 S.My sailplane spars are three times the thickness of a KR and the drilling was done with standard length drill bits.using two and a jig.The wafs are accurately located and clamped and the the jig positioned, the hole started on one side, drill released.drill bit left in position, another drill bit fixed into the drill and the hole drilled through from the opposite side.,pushing the other drill bit ,on the other side, out.On the KR it is easier.as the spar is not as wide. The jig is very easy to make.It is simply a U shape steel with holes drilled to accept a pipe of the required diameter ,brazed in position, then a portion cut out wide enough for an easy slide over the spar and wafs.A good drawing can save a thousand words and ,if you forward me your address ,I would be glad to send you a sketch. If I scratch around,I might find my jig and I will send it to you. Best Regards, Eric Evezard, South Africa. ------------------------------ Message: 4 Date: Fri, 8 Oct 2004 16:51:28 -0400 From: "Orma" Subject: Re: KR> (no subject) To: "KRnet" Message-ID: <000d01c4ad78$962897e0$6c34d445@ROBBINS1> Content-Type: text/plain; charset="iso-8859-1" I imagine the worse scenario Hello Pat If the pressure is ok at start up and decreases as the oil temp goes up, you still need more information. At an oil temp of say 200 deg, what is the pressure at idle and at 2500 RPM. The minimum pressure at idle is low, I can't say for sure without my book, but, 10 PSI sticks in my head. Others will surely add to what I say. At cruise speed, hot, the engine should make around 30 PSI. Again these are guesses. There are such things as pressure relief valves with springs that need to be checked, as well as the pump. Before engine assembly, the crank and bearings should have been bolted together with the case halves along with a material call plasti-gauge. A small smear of this material is placed on the bearing shell and is squeezed in the bolting process and then can be measured with a gauge supplied with the material and you can determine if the bearings are too loose. Since you are together and running, I would suggest trying this. CAUTION WORKING AROUND A OPERATING ENGINE ESPECIALLY ONE WITH A PROPELLER IS DANGEROUS. KEEP YOUR HANDS HEAD ARMS AND ALL OTHER BODY PARTS CLEAR OF THE PROP AND OTHER MOVING ENGINE PARTS. Listen to the engine while running with a piece of plastic tubing, used as a doctor might listen for a heart beat. listen to the case at the parting line for clicking or ticking noises. If you listen near the valves you should be able to hear each of them. If you don't hear any odd noises, make your initial search for another cause for poor pressure. The use of a high volume pump is an option if the one you have is standard. I recall they had two models. One read to within .1 degree and the other was .2 degree scale. Other than that, call any of the tool supply outlets in your area. I've had my "SmartLevel" for at least 6 to 8 years now and it still works great. It came with a 24" rail, the removable module, and a padded carrying case and I recall paying $89 at the time. It has 4 modes of operation, degrees, pitch (for roofs, etc), % of grade, and an artifical bubble. My wife thinks I'm a bit waco when I drag out my SmartLevel to put up a shelf but I don't have that many chances to use it and I'd like to get a return on my investment. It sure worked great setting the washout in the outer wing panels on the KR which flies without any trim tabs. Maybe I've gotten my moneys worth already. :-) Good Luck.
