The first picture you can see the balance horns on bill Clapp's KR. For a better picture click down about 15 pictures. You may also want to go to http://www.maddyhome.com/krsrch/index.jsp which is the KR net archives and read what has been said about the stability of Bills plane. I wasnt sure how the plane would react flight wise but I have been pleased. The stability is increadible - compared to my stock KR2 - but ive done so many changes that I cant say with any certainty how much the balances contribute. I have new airfoils (wing and elevator) new incidences, KR2S lengths, and Corvair power. I fly with the CG on the forward limit or slightly behind it. I have pleanty of power so it handles and climbs well. The elevatore feel is good at slow speeds and just slightly sensitive at higher speeds but better than my stock KR2. In smooth air it goes where I put the nose with very little tendancy to move away from that position. I can take off and put the nose in a Vy or cruise climb and let go of the stick and it stays put. This may have something to do with the aerodynamic balances but not sure. I just know that I like it. I use very little elevator trim throughout all speeds and weights - about 1/4" total trim travel is all I have used and that is when I am doing 175 or so. Overall I am very pleased with the flight characteristics of N41768. 85 hours and counting....Bill ------------------------------ Message: 5 Date: Sun, 21 Nov 2004 14:12:44 -0600 From: "Mark Langford" Subject: Re: KR> balance horns - Clapp To: "KRnet" Message-ID: <001901c4d006$7691bbe0$1202a8c0@basement> Content-Type: text/plain; charset="iso-8859-1" Intuition would tell me that aerodynamic balances would make the thing more pitch sensitive, sort of like power steering, and some other aero guys I know say the same. But Richard Mole says they'll improve stability, and he's got a Phd in aeronautical engineering, so he probably knows. He ran the numbers on a stock KR2 and determined the dimensions of what has become known at the "Mole Tail", which is pretty close to what Bill has. Perhaps the only way to find out if they help or hurt is to try it both ways on the same plane, making no other changes, and I plan to do exactly that once I have a good baseline performance to compare with. That's another reason I haven't painted my plane yet. One thing's for sure though...Bill's plane is certainly stable, so that's tells you that it's not a really BAD idea... Don't defy your elders. Larry F. says to use finish (deck) cloth to wrap the aileron spars because it bends well around the edges. Well, I am using RA cloth which also bends very well, SO. Well, RA cloth does bend well where the area on the spar is wide, for about 8" along the fat end, but then it starts puffing up at the edges. So, thinking fast, I decided to wrap a layer of deck cloth over that, to keep it down and it worked, but not without a lot of stress to me. On the next one, I did what Larry said to do. I put on two layers of deck cloth. No puffing and no stress. Anyway, job done and remember, don't defy your elders. This time, my results did not vary, however, as you already know, yours will vary. But if you try it be careful of the heat. Joe Horton On Sun, 21 Nov 2004 15:24:22 -0500 (Eastern Standard Time) "Dan Heath" writes: > Well, I learned a lesson today. Don't defy your elders.
