I standard KR2S cannot be trimmed. It will keep the trim speed for a maximum of 30 seconds before it will climb or descend and not return to the trim speed.... My authority would not certify such a longitudinal static and dynamic instability. I am currently experimenting with horizontal stabilizer extensions to the plans build stab. I added 10cm (4 inch) on each side of the horizontal stab. I was surprised, with the extension the static stability increased so that you can trim the KR. Upsetting the trim speed the KR will now go back the trim speed within +-5kts. Approach speed trimming is not a problem now. However the dynamic stability has increase and if you move the stick 1" forward and then 1" aft and let go, it will go up and down indefinitely with a speed range between 80-120 kts (I guess this is a neutral dynamic stability). My plan is now to increase the horizontal span by 15cm (6 ") on either side and test again to see if the dynamic stability improves further. The air was quite smooth at 3500 feet so I did some "hand off the stick" test. On one attempt I was able to take my hand off the stick for a full 30 seconds (timed with my watch) before it started to wander off and I had to grip the stick. I did cheat a bit with some side to side head bobbing and a few sholder wiggles. That's the longest I've been able to release the stick and challenge other KR fliers to beat that time. I once made a flight in the Tripacer just after sundown and was able to fly hands off the yoke for 25 minutes. I did a forward and back lean for altitude correction and very slight rudder inputs for direction and wings level. I even made the decent into the airport hands off the yoke. I finally had to grip the yoke after trying to rudder a turn into a left downwind. So, that is now done. A word about the gathering. After hosting two prior gatherings myself, I can assure you Larry is very, very busy setting this gathering up for you, the pilots and builders. It takes a lot of up front money and time to get everything together so it appears to run itself, trust me, that is not the case. I am sure, after talking with Larry several times over the last several months, volunteers will be maning various tables, signup, banquet signup, lunch, forum presenters, awards and such. I'm going to jump in for Larry here, raise your hand or tap Larry on the shoulder and volunteer to do something/anything over the gathering weekend. Trust me, it will be appreciated. Also, remember this gathering is attendee financed. As an example, I had to pay a very substantial deposit to block rooms at Lake Barkley in addition to putting a deposit on the banquet hall. In addition, the host has to buy hats, t-shirts, name tags and a multitude of other expenditures. Larry will spend some of his own money up front. My experience, as most other host experienced, we ended up with more money at the end than we started with to be forwarded to the next host but it takes some out of pocket money to pull this off. Remember, it takes money to pull off the gathering so buy a hat, buy a t-shirt drop an extra $$ into the donation box, remember this is your gathering not the host's gathering. Mine was supposed to be temporary but I've got 76 hours on the KR now and haven't even started the permanant fiberglass ones yet. Good luck with your project. If I was in Aus that would probably be the way I'd go. Course been a while since I've seen the price but since very seldom do prices drop I'd say it's still beyond my meager funds. Doug Rupert Simcoe Ontario If I was to build a KR2S in I would probably use the 6 cylinder Jabiru 3300 120hp for 81kg. regards Barry Kruyssen Cairns, Australia RAA 19-3873 ------------------------------ Message: 23 Date: Mon, 12 Jul 2004 08:19:28 -0700 From: larry severson Subject: Re: KR> Spins? Only the canard planes (mainly Rutan designs) won't spin. If you don't know how to recover the KR, you have a reasonable chance of becoming one of the statistics of those who die due to a low altitude spin. A few jets (T-38) aren't spun because they flame out almost immediately, so the only recourse is to punch out after 1.5 turns. The KR2 or S do not fall in either of these categories. Nor is either model close to the short coupling of the famed GeeBee of the 30's which made spin recovery nearly impossible. I live about 120 miles away and am willing to trailer it to the 2004 gathering frenzy. It's just about finished!
