I used the Advisory Circular from the Lakeland Safety Center, which is available from either AOPA, or EAA websites also. It details everything you need to do, and gives examples in the appendices of the forms required, how to fill them out, etc... I will post a complete break down ( bad choice of words) of the inspection commentary, good and bad for all to learn from. Here goes... Subject: RE: KR> Final inspection To: "KRnet" Message-ID: Content-Type: text/plain; charset="iso-8859-1" I was rejected on my first attempt for my instrument check ride in 1999 because I did not provide an airworthy aircraft (Cessna 172). The aircraft log book did not have a current ELT battery inspection signoff and there was no remote indicator in the pilot's field of view. Sid Wood, KR-2 N6242 Mechanicsville, MD Sidney.wood@titan.com << File: ATT46475.txt >> Hi netters. The requirement to have a remote panel switch (as well as a way of determining that the ELT is on... either via a light or by audible tone..... plus a way to silence it from the panel) was by way of a change to F.A.R. 91. This change occurred back in 1995 and was a simple change requiring all new installations to conform to a new TSO C91a. The old TSO (C91) only required that the ELT have a "G" sensing switch. With the increase of false activations etc, the new generation of ELT's needed a way to detect a false activation and to silence the unit. Hence the change in the T.S.O. number. In this respect, it should be pointed out that the older (T.S.O. C91) ELT's should not be considered for new installations. I know of some A/C that have passed inspection with an older unit installed, but only because the DAR was not familiar enough with the regulations to catch it. Besides, most of the newer ones (ACK is my choice) use standard "D" cell batteries and are much more economical to service. Mark, I think you are still on the "overkill" side, even with .060. It would weigh: (@.125 thk =4.25 lbs) (@.060 thk =2.04 lbs) Consider this: 6061-T6 has a Tensile Strength of 42 KSI 7075-T6 has a Tensile Strength of 78 KSI So probably .040 thick 7075-T6 would be more than adequate. The 7075-T6 is as much as 80% stonger than the 6061-T6(when comparing same loads and thicknesses). Add stiffening angles to get the required stiffeness needed to handle panel buckling. You can achieve expotentially higher stiffeness by adding angles, than you could ever hope to gain by simply making the part thicker. Use solid rivets to attach the piano hinge and stiffening angles. Commercial, hardware store "pop" rivets are for non-flight applications. Don't use them on your airplane. The material they are made from is hardly airworthy to begin with (I do not wish to get into some big debate over this issue, so please don't even go there!). Probably 5/32nds spaced at 6 to 8 D (.96 to 1.28)would suffice to attach the stiffening angles to the speed brake panel. That means probably 8, 5/32nd fasteners per stiffener. This would give the attachment capability of each stiffener approximately 4600 lbs of shear. Probably 5 angles minimum to break up the panel, and hemming the edge couldn't hurt either. This would "break-up" the 9 x 36 inch panel into 4, 9 x 9 panels. Much smaller area when considering panel buckling. The stiffening angles should be (obviously) positioned longitudinally to reduce drag when the speed brake is in the stowed position. The stiffening angles probably only need to be about .50 inch tall and attach with a .75 inch flange. Again, probably more than overkill. The good news is that it would only weigh approximately 1.60 lbs. Bottom line? 1.6 lbs vs 4.25 lbs, A much lighter, and many times over stiffer panel. Another suggestion: make the Speed Brake with a couple of plys of BID, and co-cure some stiffening angles onto the speed brake panel. This would weigh about half of the .040 7075-T6 version. ===== Scott Cable KR-2S # 735 Wright City, MO s2cable1@yahoo.com __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? Yahoo! Last night I met my Guitar hero and Aircraft's namesake, Joe Satriani. Joe gave a guitar clinic at Dale's Music here in St. Louis. I was able to meet Joe, and he gladly autographed my builder's log and photo album. I named my airplane "Flying in a Blue Dream" after Joe's song and album. Joe was very thankful that I honored his song in this manner and gladly accepted my invitation to give him a ride in my aircraft when it's completed. Joe autographed the photo album with "Keep on Flying!". Unlike most celeberties, Joe personallized the experience by making alot of eye contact, carefully listened to each fan, and didn't leave until everyone had their chance to talk with him, shake his hand, and get an autograph. There were over 1000 people that showed up for the "clinic". Joe's latest Album "Is There Love in Space" has a title on it for song number 8: "If I could Fly" ===== Scott Cable KR-2S # 735 Wright City, MO s2cable1@yahoo.com __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? A few days ago I turned it over and made a few minor repairs to the bottom, then sanded and glassed with 2oz cloth and west system. (very nive finish) Question Would be better to do the same with the sides, or get the canopy , forward and turtle deck made and fitted before going the sides?? I would think it may not matter, but it would be nice to get some protection on the bare ply. I have the Diehl set up and here is what I have: Nose wheels: Azusa 5" aluminum wheel with 5/8" bearings. WICKS #AZ-1144 $25.33 each Nose Tire: WICKS #TR100-022 $10.35 each Nose Tube: WICKS #TB100-022 $4.55 each Nose Axle: Supplied with Diehl nose gear. Main wheels: Azusa 5" aluminum wheel with 5/8" bearings. WICKS #AZ-1144 $25.33 each Main Axles: GREAT PLAINS 5/8" Pre Welded Axle Kit (includes both axles) $54.95 Main Tires: WICKS #TR100-040 SHIN (was Lamb) $14.99 ea. Main Tube: WICKS #TB100-040 $7.50 ea. I used a rubber mallet to put the wheels on the axles. They go on very easy. Note: The nose wheel size I listed above is the largest size which will work on the Diehl nose gear. It looks like the airplane I'm buying is still in the detail shop until next week, and the pre-purchase mechanic is unavailable this weekend. It's Mom's weekend at UofO, but I think I can break away this weekend to meet you at the Corvallis airport. I need to check with the wife. I'll probably call Friday to see if we can work out a time. I guess my engine choice is made! I have a Rand 2S cowling, but the engine is a little too much disassembled to see if it will fit. Can anyone tell me if a Corvair fits in the normal Rand cowl or should I sell the cowl and start from scratch?
