All I am doing by raising the tail with the aircraft stationary on the ground is altering the angle made between the pivot stalk and the horizontal plane of the compass ring. I just can't see why this would rotate the compass and further why it does not return to the original position once the lift is stopped...and now the stumper...why doesn't it happen with the compass in my friend's Tiger Moth? Errrr....an analogy might help..... A frisbee balanced horizontally on the top of my finger doesn't care or know at what angle my forearm is....it remains horizontal. Even if the frisbee is weighted on one side and the pivot point offset to maintain the horizontal plane, the same thing applies. What am I missing here?? This is becoming one of life's mysteries..... like why does a mirror invert text in a book left to right but not bottom line to top line.....I hate when I wax lyrical other than on Fridays. One is for lots of firewall forward pictures of the KR's at the Gathering. While I'm sure that will happen on it's own I'll toss it out there to make sure it's covered. Second, I had a request for some rather extensive aircraft data that could be put into a database. While a considerable amount of info could be gathered at the Gathering, I see this as more of an on-line type project. A paper form filled out would have to be scanned or entered by hand, neither of which appeals to me. So, here is the request or challenge: Is there someone out there capable and willing to create a form that can be filled out on-line and compiled in a database that can be accessed, printed, etc., on line? I'll "cut and paste" below the general info requested and this could maybe be added to with additional request from netters before the form is finalized. Let's not wait for Mark L. to say he will do it as he is MUCH to busy. Any takers?............ It is drilled for the revmaster prop hub which is SAE1 with 4 3/8" dia bolt circle. Jerry flew his KR with this prop to Merced, Ca, Oshkosh and at least one of the gatherings a few years back. The length & pitch are 52/50. The engine I have, has a VW prop hub with 4" dia. bolt circle. I would be willing to trade this prop for one with a little less pitch that would bolt up to the VW prop hub. I was told Ted is retired now, but I tried to reach him anyway to see if he could re-drill this one just to use as a test prop, but the number found on the internet for him is no longer any good. To get it started I punch a little hole in it with an awl. Once the hole is about half way through the firewall, I go to the other side and start back using the same hole center. That keeps from splintering the wood on the backside of the cut. I know Sterba would drill and rebalance your prop for you. That's who did mine for Steve. I made the decision several days ago that I would not take on any work from others so that I could have a hope to complete the KR in time for the Gathering. So, as of 4:00 EST the engine is assembled, the valves are adjusted, initial timing for the 009 and the magneto have been verified and finally the exhaust and mount is installed. Tomorrow morning I will get some strong bodies and place the engine back on the firewall. My mount is such that all I have to do is drop in the four pins and the cotter keys and it's a done deal. I will spend the next two days installing the accessories, wires, probes, fuel and various other things to make it operate. My hope is that by Saturday I will be able to start the engine. On top is "# 6123" and on the bottom is "book 59". Does anyone have the correct meaning of the top number. Also, I remember some of the earlier discussion about stall speeds and VNE, my cover lists numbers for the KR-2 and Turbo KR-2. Of interest is the Stall speed of 42 MPH and the Top Speed of 210, for the Turbo KR-2. I used a good tungsten carbide bit and set the drill press for the correct speed. The first hole went in okay, the second much harder, and the third one gave me a ball of fire and a melted tip on the bit. I contacted a friend that is restoring his eighth aircraft and had just drilled some 1 1/2 inch deep holes through a stainless steel gear leg mount. He said to run the drill as slowly as possible, use as much pressure as possible without bending the bit, and used GO-JO handcleaner for the lubricant. I followed his directions and drilled 125 more holes in the stainless without dulling the bit. Life is wonderful. His explanation is that stainless gets very hard when it is worked fast. The GO-JO doesn't sling off the bit and seemed to cool the metal quite well. This is only an educated guess, but it is my understanding that RR keeps the name and address of the original plans purchaser (and possibly any known secondary) in notebooks in numerical sequence. Since they are over 10K on the KR-2 / 2S that makes for a lot of books. My basic KR-2 S/N is 9707, "Master File Book No.82". Allen G.
