It's rewarding to see you practicing this far in advance of your first flight. That speaks well of your dedication. Some points to remember while practicing. The yeeEEE HAAaaa is always done two octaves above the natural speaking voice and done immediately after engine shutdown for maximum effect. You're trying to impart the feeling that you just had so much fun that you thought you were going to have to change your shorts. Don't get discouraged if it doesn't seem to be working. Practice will strengthen the voice and the inflection will only be perfected after the first flight. Hang in there. The rewards are well worth the practice! For those of you who haven't heard about them yet.... they have been on the market now for about 6-8 years. Concorde battery started with the technology and now Gill also sells them for aircraft. This are available for certified A/C and come in all the sizes and voltages to fit almost every application. They cost a little more than the old flooded type lead acid batteries, but there is no hazardous shipping with them. As a matter of fact, Aircraft Spruce sells them and they pay the shipping. The great thing about these batteries is that they require no box for mounting AND they don't leak, vent or spew acid all over. Performance is every bit equal to the old flooded type. Actually, they have a model they call "XC (for extra cranking) that will out perform the flooded type. For those of you wanting an "aircraft type" battery or that have a "spam can" that needs a battery...... do yourself, your aircraft AND your mechanic a favor and use these new sealed ones. I found that it wasn't much harder to pull the handle at 150 mph than when I was sitting on the ramp. 2) What effect would it have if I forgot to raise it while doing touch and goes? Almost unnoticeable since,I'm getting about 130 hp on takeoff from my Subie EJ-22 with PSRU. It would probably have a bigger effect if I was using a smaller engine. 3) What effect would it have in cruise flight? It cost me 10 mph in speed and my water temp goes up about 10 degrees F. By the way, I am trying a new belly mounted radiator. I'll let all of you know how it works. I'm hoping it runs cooler and causes less drag. It was too hot to close the door, so I went home early. I guess The VP just doesn't care about the KR gathering that I'm trying to fly to. Today was a different story. I adjusted my Revflow a few turns out and started the engine. It responded by running up nicely to 5000 RPM. After a one minute run, I stopped and installed the wind maker. With the prop installed, I was only able to open the throttle to one half before the engine starved for gas. I tried with the waste gate wired both open and shut. I have taken the engine to 3100 RPM and 35" Hg on the manifold pressure. My altimeter, the MP gauge and the tower agreed that the pressure outside was 30.01. With the waste gate open I was showing about 25 on the MP gauge. I don't know the relationship between " Hg and PSI that reads on a Boost gauge. If anyone does please sound off. It appears that the effect of the boost translated into about 200 RPM at the prop. The remainder of all runs was made with the waste gate open. After several needle adjustments and shaves, I was able to get the engine to 3000 RPM and 30" Hg. At the point of high RPM the following is occurring: The number 4 cylinder (Passenger Front) is leading the CHT by nearly 100 Degrees. After 2500 RPM it quickly raised to over 400 Degrees, while other cylinders are at 300 ( the cowling was removed and plane was direct into a good breeze). At 2K the temps remained fairly even; The throttle could never be opened completely (verified by marking the throttle position with a marks a lot and after shut down setting the throttle in that position and looking at the slide in the venturi) The throttle could be nursed to it highest setting but if opened further, the engine would die. My friends and I concluded that if the engine is given more air and can't draw the required fuel, it would starve and shut down. (Comments requested) All in all it was a good day. It was somewhat frustrating, but I am coming to the point that I feel that the revflow might be the real issue. I did not have much fuel and the head pressure was probably low. Perhaps I could add a pump to be used for take off only. (comments Please). I would also like to hear from all operators that have a homebuilt plane with a Volkswagen with a turbo. I want to know how you use and or control the boost in your plane. ------------------------------ Message: 22 Date: Wed, 25 Aug 2004 18:51:28 -0400 From: Subject: Re: Re: KR> Belly Boards To: KRnet Message-ID: <20040825225127.XEJ17253.fed1rmmtao07.cox.net@smtp.west.cox.net> Content-Type: text/plain; charset=ISO-8859-1 Larry; My SB is 6 x 30" and it deploys 30 degrees. The main difference I notice in landing is that there is much less float with the SB deployed. I haven't checked it on descent...since I don't use it on descent. I just pull the throttle back with no worries about cracking heads, since I'm water cooled. However, I suppose I'll give it a try. It still has the protective coating on it. If you are going to the gathering, I will bring it with me. You can have it for $100 or trade it for something. Mike Turner Great! we're planning on going to the reunion but my grandfather just had back surgery so it will depend on how he's doing. If it doesn't work out we're wondering what part of the world your in? I'm in WI, and he's in TN, maybe we're neighbors. Hope to see everyone next month and thanks for the replies _______________________________________ to UNsubscribe from KRnet, send a message to KRnet-leave@mylist.net please see other KRnet info at http://www.krnet.org/info.html ------------------------------ Message: 25 Date: Wed, 25 Aug 2004 22:56:44 EDT From: TNCOMPRESSORMAN@aol.com Subject: Re: KR> Type 4 Engine Bulidup & conversion to PSI To: krnet@mylist.net Message-ID: <155.3d31f42c.2e5eab6c@aol.com> Content-Type: text/plain; charset="ISO-8859-1" Orma, The new bigger, boosted engine may require much more fuel than before.
