Take off is l-o-n-g, and that's from a hard surface. Climb performance is poor, 150 ft/min, and landings are ok but you aware that your 'heavy'. And this is with an 1835 cc VW taken out to 1915 cc. I'm basing this on average temperature days ( Scotland in summer = Maine in fall ? ) at sea level. I'm not saying it's not possible, but with a 1600 cc I'm not too sure... With an 1835 VW you can expect 110mph burning 3.5GPH which equals to 31MPG With a O-164 corvair (100hp) you could expect about 170mph burning 5.6 giving 30MPG. Is it worth 150FPM? What if you run into some unexpected downdrafts and cant get out because you dont have the power to? Even flying a C-150 which gives me solo 750FPM, has a heck of a time climbing to 9000', get a downdraft and it quits climbing (ask me how I know). Thanks to all for the kind words of support & encouragement! For those desiring correct information about actual performance achieved with the KR 1 or 2, that person truly needs to study the web pages of the people actually flying those KR's. There are KR's reporting best economy cruise numbers of 110mph, but are heavy and "dirty" aircraft lacking wheel pants, and other drag reducing additions or attention to detail. Just to name a few, there are several things that must be considered when analyzing performance of a particular aircraft. The engine seems to get all the attention, but that is just the beginning. How clean is the aircraft, what prop is being used both length and pitch numbers. Look at the difference between Troy Petteway's & Larry Flesner's aircraft. Both using the O-200, but different weights and different props. Larry has more "wetted" area than Troy's, and is using the RAF48 wing, Troy the AS40XX wing. Like we found in drag racing, it is not just how big the motor is, but how well the combination works together. Lots of HP that cannot be converted to thrust is useless. Typically from my study, more horsepower does more to help climb numbers, while cleaner designs and attention to drag reduction does more to help cruise speed numbers. As airspeed goes up so does the drag, so to fly faster, you need to think about more thrust, AND reducing drag or your improvements will probably be very modest compared to what you think. And to borrow a phrase from Larry, "your results may vary".... His EGT has jumped from the normal 1100 degrees to over 1500 degrees, his plugs indicate a lean condition, and he's running much hotter coolant temps. He's running 1/2 inch fuel lines, and replaced the fuel filter at the beginning of the season. I suggested that he test the output of the fuel pump, and although he insisted that the fuel pressure was 6 psi, he finally decided to test the pump for fuel output volume. Bingo! the fuel pump was supplying less than 1/2 of the volume than specified. Just to be sure it was the pump, and not a clogged strainer, he pulled the strainer out of the fuel cell, and of course it was clean. How does this relate to a KR? Look at the failure mode: Higher than normal EGT's Higher than normal cylinder head temps/faster than normal temperature climb Plugs indicate lean condition High speed stumble May or may not show a drop in fuel pressure. Seems to me that the only time you would notice a drop in fuel pressure would be at times when the engine is in high power settings such as during take-off and climb. ===== Scott Cable KR-2S # 735 Wright City, MO s2cable1@yahoo.com __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? For those who arent familar with the LA basin the airport is just under 7000'msl. I have flown there in a 150 in the past and had no problems what so ever, but one particualar time I got some downdrafts on my way up, the plane stuck at about 5,000MSL refusing to climb anymore. Once I broke free of that downdraft it of course kept on putting up. Point is, why would anyone want to fly an under powered airplane. Im not calling the KR under powered, but 150fpm is just nerve wrecking. My VolksPower acc case is back from the welder, and the only thing that remains to do on it, is to drill and tap it for the starter mount bolts. I ordered copper head gaskets from Geers Engineering yesterday and will get delivery by the end of next week. The cylinders and pistons are installed and the heads are in place for the moment. The engine assembly is on the engine stand/ firewall assembly and this afternoon the entire package along with my cowling was delivered to the exhaust maker along with the turbo and carb. It will also be the end of next week before he has the time to work on it. I have a few odd things that must be done to the airframe, like relocate the gasolator. My compression ratio should be just a tad over 7.5. To get that number I'm using .042" copper gaskets. The cost will be $65.00. With any luck I may get airborne by the end of the month. Ideally it's attention to detail, any and all drag reduction methods available and in my case at least a smooth little 13B rotary under the cowl (180 horse around same weight as a Vair). Will keep you posted as the project develops. Right now in the process of changing the inboard wing root angle of attack. Got the AS 40XX wing plans back from the printer's today and starting construction ASAP. Boat mods are well under way and many of the fittings have been removed and sent off to be powder coated. 1" foam insulation between all longerons and floor to quiet things down a bit plus add a little comfort for us boys not lucky enough to live down south. Hardest part so far has been deciding which mods to go with and what not. With the wealth of information here and in the digests a person could quite easily make a career building and never live long enough to fly the bird. As Dan says there is a time for building and a time for flying. Best of luck with the inspection and regards to Bev for a speedy recovery.
