I look at a variety of engines the 0200 is a great engine but a very expensive one to work on I priced to zero time an engine I was given fixed price's of over $25 000 aus I wanted 100hp plus for the strips I will use and some more performance I have seen an rg2200 efi run it was on the back of a trayback ute and the tray was bending it had from memory a 66X60 pitch it was 3 blade too it was only run up to 2900rpm as it was being run in but was not shown any sign of even loading up at this stage it has an enomous amout of torque and has fuel injection which also helps but I will get better fuel consumption and overall perfomance than the 0200 and will only cost me about 3000 dollars aus to zero time if I am out in the austrailian outback and for instance and I need some engine part the local auto shop will probably have the part the 0200 I will have to wait! At the end of the day I would love to have a lancair 4 but I am too a poor pilot who wants to fly so I have to look at what will be the best on my wallet but also the safety side ways heavily!!! Here in australia the jabiru 80 hp is a very popular engine but it is a direct drive with a carbie it is light and reliable but for not a lot more I have got 110hp+ fuel injection and the reduction drive look at the rotax engines they have a reduction drive and go very well. I was also impressed with the workmanship on the engine! I understand that u can get a engine for cheaper and that is good but I have spent a lot of time and money just to build the plane I would hate to run off the end of the strip or clip a gum tree on take off on a hot day so it does become a balance of what risk u are prepared to take! That was despite reports on the web that it was simply a builder signoff once the DAR had done his initial inspection without them. I just called the DAR, and he said indeed it WAS merely a signoff, and that he (nor the FAA) has anything to do with it. Looks like my plane will fly its first season with no nav lights or strobes. I also asked him about setting a higher gross weight, and he said that I, as the builder, can set it to whatever I want, and that'll be what it's listed as in the registration database. I think I'm gonna like this guy. Very helpful, friendly, and he only charges $200, and 34 cents a mile travel... Some folks are not = English majors nor diplomats, but I do understand what you are telling = me. I have also consulted with two aeronautical engineers this past weekend. = I have concluded: =20 My first question: Is an extra 25 hp worth an extra $9,000? An extra 25 hp, all other things considered equal, will result in a 10 = percent speed increase. If I get 150 MPH with 75 hp, then I would get = 165 MPH with 100 hp. Perhaps to some (or many) that is quite desirable, = especially if money is no object. But then why are you building a KR = aircraft? I want to build an economical performance airplane. I am not = inclined to build my own engine. So, for me the answer is no. Second: Is an estimated extra 91 pounds empty weight on a KR-2 = realistic? About 90 percent of this will be forward of the main spar = and ahead of the firewall. My engineer friends estimate the gross weight will be 1050 pounds = instead of 950 pounds. My KR-2 would have the CG at 0.2 inches ahead of = the max forward CG from the plans at gross and 1.0 inch forward of max = forward CG at VFR minimum fuel with just myself on board, no baggage. = That was deemed flyable, but definitely not recommended. So, that = answer is no. =20 Third: How will the taller gear effect ground handling and flight = characteristics? =20 There would most likely be no discernable change in ground handling or = flight characteristics with the taller gear. There was lots of concern = for loading on the spar at the gear attach points due to increased = strain from the longer gear legs especially during hard landings. Dan = Diehl did recommend that I not use his aluminum castings with longer = gear legs. The RG TT 2000 EFI is a wonderful engine development with the technology = that I want. However, it is just not suitable for me and my KR-2. = Others may find just the opposite for their aircraft, and I applaud them = for their choice. I am opting for a direct-drive 2180 VW and standard = Diehl tri-gear.
