You cut the aileron out of the wing and then close up the aileron and wing with 1/4" spruce. That would be the material the aileron hinges attach to. Thus you must know the strength of the wood that you want to use. Do not use parts that contain pitch pockets. large loose knots etc. The grain should be similar to spruce in direction etc. I bought mine at a lumber yard. They let me pick it over. I bought 2 x 8 x 10' . I bought more than I needed. Now comes the interesting part. You must test for hidden defects.Realize that trees subjected to violent wind during their life history can have fractures in the wood . Similarly when they are cut down and fall to the ground they may be subject to internal damage. Cut off a strip down the length of one side, about 1/8 to 1/4 inch wide. Bend this strip. It should be quite flexible. Break it.Look at the break if it is a clean break ( a flaw) mark with a felt pen the location on the same spot on the main plank. The break should be rough and splintery to be ok. Now cut a similar strip off the other side of the board and subject it to the same test. Mark easy or smooth breaks on the main board. If there is a mark opposite each other on the main board you may be assured that all the wood in between contains the same flaw.Run it through the saw and cut out this section , about 2 inches on either side of the flaw. The rest of the wood is good. It may be too short for your purposes but remember that a good scarf joint made with epoxy glue will give you a piece of wood that is stronger that an unscarfed one. Of the 8 planks that I bought , only one was flawless. Thus I have a scarf joint out near the tip on one wing. I have a beautiful piece of Douglas Fir that was hand picked out for me by a mill inspector. It came along after much of the woodwork was done. Too bad. I have also some white pine (eastern) of excellent quality in some places. I can stand on the trailing edge of my wing stubs because I had a couple of pieces if hard mahogany that ended up there. I hope to see a few of you there this year. This will be my first year there in N41768 and sure hope its not the last. I have just clocked over 138 hours on her and still having fun. Saddly I havent flown in over two weeks... maybe this next weekend. Im doing a couple cowling mods and some repair and paint work to my wheel pants. I hope to have strobe installations finished - left wing is done but still need parts for the right wingtip. For the guys checking out finished money invested in there planes, I had 7258.00 total at the time of the Gathering 04. Since then I have invested a couple hundred bucks more and still have more plans down the road but it wasnt too hard to have a nice flying plane for a relatively low price and low time investment (about 600 hours). I may decide to begine building another KR2S in a couple years with a few mods that Ive been thinking about. However, N41768 has been fun and a good experience. Ive flown in all sorts of weather from 100 degrees to 40 below, snow, rain, (no sleat or ice), turbulence, and beautiful blue skies, and it have remained steady and very secure. This plane does much better in turbulence than my other standard KR2. I used to have to slow down my other one to 120 mph or I would bounce all over but this plane does well at a manuevering speed of 150. I hope to get my top speed over the 180 mark with a couple mods but Im comfortably flying 65% power(give or take) at 150 mph buring about 4.5 gph. Not bad! Full throttle can get me 180 but I also burn about 6 or so GPH. Ive got some prop changes to make and test out to see if I can get better performance but that requires time and money I dont have at this point. Keep building guys (and gals) and get in the air soon - there is a lot of room up there for you! Well maybe this will help... Are you tired of searching through the stacks of different grades of sandpaper? To organize my "stack" I bought one of those divided portable file holders for a couple of bucks at WalMart. I place the various grades into their own slot, and if you're as anal as I am, I even labeled the tabs for which grade and wet or dry. I also found that it's convenient to store grinding discs and scotch-brite into also. All my sandpaper in one place in the shop, it's a thing of beauty. The file folders keep them nice and flat and the tabs on the folders make for easy selection. For cutting sandpaper - an old used hacksaw blade mounted on the skirt of my work table makes a neat cutting tool for the paper. When attaching the hacksaw blade (I used screws), place a thin washer between the backside of the blade and the bench in order to provide room to slip the sandpaper behind it. YEEEEHAAWWWW!!! To: "KRnet" Message-ID: Content-Type: text/plain; charset="us-ascii" Hello Netters, Well, today, KR-2 N902G made her first flight since being damaged during the January floods in Corona, California. The prop was repaired, refinished, and balanced (what a pain that was!). The elevator was repaired and a new trim tab installed. The trim tab was courtesy of Richard Shirley while I was working on the elevator. I now have ALOT more trim authority due to the larger size and have plenty to spare. I still have to do the final paint. Once the weather clears up a bit maybe. Other collateral damage was discovered once the plane was washed. The tarps left significant scrathes all over the canopy and paint. The only thing I can figure is the wind whipped the tarp a bit causing the damage. The bungees I used also left nasty marks on the fuselage. I had to spend half the day polishing out the canopy and paint. Fortunately most of the scratches came out. The canopy needs a bit more work but I think it will clean up. The weather has been marginal so it was a quick 20 minute flight. Too much haze and fog. It sure was nice to get back in the air, though. I still have a few things to clean up or repair around the hangar. After that, maybe I can get back to building that new Corvair motor for the KR. I lost a number of parts for that during the flood(s) also. It will take some time to recoup everything, but hey, at least I'm flying, right? Oh, by the way, when are we gonna get the two Mark(s) flying??? At this rate, at least we won't have to worry about not having a photo crew for this year's Gathering. ;) (I can't wait to see those two KR's. They're gonna be awesome! I'm jealous...) As we get closer to spring and better weather, I am planning a semi west coast tour to visit some builders. I know of a few in the bay area and Cameron Park. I may need to stop by over in Phoenix also. I know Lee Van Dyke has to be getting close to flying now. Canada may be a bit far for the weekend though. Hey Dan, you flying to the Gathering this year with Jerry??? If anyone else out here on the left coast wants a visitor, let me know. Stay motivated...keep building. It is soooo worth it!!!
