To: krnet@mylist.net Message-ID: Content-Type: text/plain; charset="US-ASCII" There are a few reasons my plane cost as little as it did. One, I waited to find a started project. I found a finished KR2S boat with spars, all fittings, gear, wheels and brakes and all cables and EXP2 bus for only 500.00! All I had to purchase was glass and resin to finish the plane. Engine is Corvair 2700 that I built myself - firewall forward @3000.00. Prop I already had from other KR. Gauges are inexpensive Mirco 1000 and VDO. Handheld radio (borrowed) and GPS (borrowed). I kept everything simple and built everything only ONCE! That is how I have so little in it yet it performs great! Ill do a better job on my next one - if I every take the time to build it. I am enjoying this one tremendously. Planning some trips to Central and South America in the future... It has its own solenoid incorporated and is much better engineered(needle bearings as opposed to p/bronze bush etc). You need to make a 1/4" ally adapter plate, but the result is worth the effort. Take for instance the birch you mentioned; it has the same SG as ash. they both weigh about 42 lbs/cu ft. Ash is used for tool handles, flooring and even baseball bats. Birch has little value in the woodworking industry except in painted and stained furniture. It is far more brittle than ash and is more readily attacked by fungi. So in this case, if you have the option, use the ash. That's not to say birch wont work.It says: for the same weight penalty, ash is the choice here. What other options are there? Honduran Mahogany...................34lbs/cu.ft Fir (douglas).................................33 " Sitka spruce..................................28 " Canadian spruce............................28 " Pines,..Vary from 22 to 33 lbs/cu.ft, most US pines closer to 33, while the canadian pines will vary greatly from the 22 to the 33. Someone recommended sassafras, and I have some experience with it. But meeting the many criteria is another issue. I've built a three planes, and they haven't broken yet. That doesn't mean they were as light as they could be or that they meet the design criteria. Many builders have substituted other woods, and they were maybe just lucky. I use CERTIFIED SPRUCE for critical areas. Like spars. You cannot find wood of that quality unless you have an "in" with someone in the business, and you're not likely to find it at a "lumber yard". To: krnet@mylist.net Message-ID: <20050313205310.81747.qmail@web51404.mail.yahoo.com> Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Hello Group, I went from "Lurker" to "Builder" yesterday! I aquired a KR-2 boat, front center spar, cowl and fuel tank. I'm very pleased with the "stuff" and we trucked it home yesterday without incident. The parts are approximately 12 years young and the "semi kit" came without plans so I'll be contacting RR soon for a set of KR-2 plans. The tailpost has not been installed yet so the parts are just about what I would want from a stand point of continuing the build. I will get to decide on how to proceed with the canopy, tail, wing and other items. As a new builder, I do have a few questions though. While moving the boat I damaged the upper cowl, nothing major, just a small crack but it will need to be repaired. The cowl appears to be stock RR stuff. What type of resin was used to make these cowls? There is some very minor water damage to the plywood on the floor near the tail and in the area between where the seats the seats will eventually be. It just looks like it got wet and then dried out. There is no delamination of the plywood. Should I be concerned about this and remove the stained plywood and scarf in some new plywood? It will not be visible so from a cosmetic point of view it is not a problem. There is a small hole in the side of the boat just behind the rear spar mounting location, several inches up from the bottom about the size of my fist. What should I do to repair this? And finally the adhesive that was used to bond the wood together is white in color. What is this adhesive and should I continue with it for the rest of the build? I have Dr. Dean wing attach fittings and I would like to use them on the KR-2 wings with the "new" 15% airfoill. Kind of a KR-2S wing on a KR-2. Any problems with doing this? The price of the parts was very reasonable so I'm not concrned with the repairs, I just want to get this KR project going again and restarted it on the right foot, or left take your pick! LOL! Just the beginning of the learning/building process and any help/advice that you all may be able to provide will be greatly appreciated. Thanks ... My eyes being the way they are now I'd need a magnifying glass taped to the screen to see a handheld. The reason I went the way I did was the moving map feature of course but being one of the larger (for it's time) marine units it has the outlet port to connect to the autopilot should one choose to install such an item. The fact that the world base map is in the resident memory is a nice item and one only need change flash cards to use the unit in your car/boat or RV (sorry Dana the other kind). Color unit would be nice but the way I look at it that $1000.00 difference would be better spent in an engine. I also picked up an operating Narco Nav 10 radio for 12 dollars. Now that was a deal as it is a combination receiver and indicator all in one unit the size of the indicator head itself saving much needed panel space. Once I get moved back to the States it's going to make life a lot simpler getting the needed equipment as costs of freight and customs fees are eating us guys up here alive. Doug Rupert A 5" screen all in one package for anywhere in that price range is a good deal. If you had to buy a PDA, those systems would cost more than that. Daniel R.
