Does anyone have any shop space that I could rent? or would anyone be interested in going in together with me on renting some space? I am currently on a waiting list for a hangar, but am told that it can be a very long time (years) before I get one. I would expect the static thrust to be higher. In addition, I believe that three blades are better than two in the thrust dept. (not cruise) so that will further contribute to the results you observed. Like any other "wing" at an AoA over 16 degrees - a propeller blade at typical cruise or take-off rpm and zero fwd movement (static) is stalled to some degree, over varying parts of the blade surface. The more pitch, the greater the degree and the more of the blade lifting surface will be stalled, producing higher drag, thus lugging the engine RPM down and producing less (static) thrust. The same propeller will unload as the "apparent" angle of attack reduces due to fwd movement, thus improving in efficiency as the aircraft accelerates - hopefully peaking (in efficiency) closer to the desired operating speed. An under-pitched propeller will show promising static thrust levels because the set-up is more efficient (less inefficient). This propeller will probably reach max efficiency sooner in the take off roll and may be substantially less efficient at the desired speeds of climb and cruise. Just like a car would be in the cruise at anything less than top gear (higher ratio). As we know, the trick fixed with pitch propellers will always be to find the best compromise for the plane / engine combo and even that will change with weight, temps and general requirements on the day - but I somehow doubt that a propellers' efficiency under static conditions could be a reliable indicator of a good compromise - these are not conditions the airplane will ever encounter in normal flight - maybe just as it stalls, but that is hardly normal flight. I would hang back with re-pitching the plank until you have established what the plastic will do in the cruise. The plane looks really good and I am pleased that the spinner saga turned out Ok. Entitled - "How I Spent My Summer, Fall, Winter, Spring Vacation" giving me a grand total of almost 2800 square feet of workspace + 1800 square feet of living space - but thats the wifes domain. The KR2S is in there under a parachute however in the process I managed to add to the collection an ARF Titan Tornado, Rotax 582, 2 snowmobiles 4 dirtbikes buying (another one today) and lots of air tools, welding equipment, trailers, etc. Had to buy the wife a new mercedes to shut her up - I also lost a bay to that I'll never buy another house with anything less than a 5 car garage! Although I think I'll have one of the lowest cost Kr's, the accessories and activities during the building process probably come to about $130k ! If she had really crunched the numbers she would have been smarter to let me buy that Cirrus! He drove up a few minutes later with Tommy Waymack and his buddy Noel, who's thinking about buying Jim's KR2S (http://home.hiwaay.net/~langford/jhill.html ). We had a good time talking KRs and Corvairs, and sampling a new batch of Amber Bock. It made me start looking forward to the Gathering already. I showed them the guts of my Corvair engine, which is headless at the moment. For the details on that, see http://home.hiwaay.net/~langford/corvair/first_runs/later1.html . I'm making progress though, knocking some more things off the list. Bill, if there are five Corvair powered KRs flying in formation, who's going to take that picture? While flying last week I noticed a slight vibration I hadn't noticed before. Nothing major, and it was a bit bumpy out so I didn't think too much about it. I checked everything out well under the cowling and airframe before our usual Saturday morning flight for breakfast with Richard Shirley and Rich Siefert. Run up had a slight abnormality, but again, nothing major. The prop was just refinished and balanced so I thought maybe the balance was off. The static balance, however, came out near perfect. Take of and climb out seemed to be normal. We flew to Flabob for breakfast and decided to fly to the coast afterwards. Rich Siefert had to get back for a meeting so it was just R. Shirley and I. Great visibility made the flight up the coast awesome. Catalina Island was incredible off in the distance. We made a few high speed passes over my house where we came in from opposite sides, crossed and made a 3+ "G" pull out. Talk about YEEEEHAAAWWWWWW!!!!! After making a strafing run of the RC planes over the old Marine Corps Air Station El Toro, we headed back to Corona. There were a lot of planes in the pattern and some just seemed to have no clue as to what they were doing. Richard and I had to make a go around. As I added power to climb, I noticed the vibration was much worse. I made it around just fine and finished with a greaser landing. When I cleared the active and started for my hangar, The shaking felt like I was taxiing over one of those old washboards. I knew it wasn't going to be good. The was hoping the prop repair didn't hold. As it turns out, the prop is fine and instead, it seems I have a broken crank.... AAAUGGHHHH!!!! Richard confirmed it. It looks as though this will be my last 2 hour flight for awhile. Instead of spending another $1000.00 on this engine, which has continued to be problematic, I think it is time to finish the Corvair and get it installed. I wanted to wait for a bit but now I have no choice. I stopped back at Richard's hangar on the way out. He went to put his plane away and we noticed a lot of oil coming out from the front of the cowling. It turns out his case cracked. There is a 1.5" crack near an oil galley on the front of the engine. Now Richard is down for a new engine as well. There has been discussion for awhile about getting rid of the VW and installing an 0200, corvair, or even a Jabiru 120 horse on his plane. Can you imagine his little racer with 120HP??? The jury is still out about his choice but this years Gathering may have a 250 MPH speed demon arriving from California. A perfect day for flying. I just may have to go back and watch the sun set from 3000'. Anyway, I flew the 52" diameter three blade Warp Drive set at 17° which is equal to 48" pitch. The take off roll was much shorter than the 56x64 Sterba prop I was flying. Cruise was 135mph at 3500' and an rpm of 2950. I like the Warp Drive with the exception that I noticed more vibration with it than with my wooden prop. I sent the wood prop to Ed Sterba to get it re-pitched to a 54x54. When I get it back, It will go back on my plane. Once I fly the new Sterba prop and performance is still lacking, I will bite the bullet and buy me an Ellison EFS3A carburetor and sell the EFS2 I am currently flying. You can make your own using tubing from Wicks and AN490 "rod ends", which can slide inside the tubing and can be riveted in place to make whatever you need. They are threaded, and come in a variety of diameters for different tubing, mostly .035" wall. The higher rpms we turn as well makes a difference. But dont take my word for it as I havent been able to hear mine yet, but I must say that Marks looks and sound fine! ------------------------------ Message: 27 Date: Sun, 3 Apr 2005 23:08:47 EDT From: IFLYKRS@aol.com Subject: KR> Just in from YYYYYEEEEEHHHAAAWWW----OOPPSS!! To: krnet@mylist.net Message-ID: <78.704a41a2.2f8209bf@aol.com> Content-Type: text/plain; charset="US-ASCII" Well, I just got in from having a new adventure in the life of N41768. A first for me as a pilot and for my plane. I just had my first passanger that has ever THROWN UP! Talk about an experience that I wasnt quite prepared for. One of my friends has a 15 year old daughter that was dying for an airplane ride - first time for her. So We hopped in - beautiful weather - CAVU ! Air was calm. Took off and flew over to my house where her folks were and we circled and buzzed the place a couple times and then headed over to her house - circled and took some photos. We leveled off about 1500 AGL and she then said "I think Im a little sick and might throw up" I sat there saying OH BOY and three second later came the spagetti. 95% on her and 5% on plane. Pretty good for me considering the odds and the size of a KR! We headed back to land - she said she was sorry about ten times - I said no problem - just unexpected (thank God for fresh air vents) Landed fine, went to the hanger and got her cleaned up. We hopped back in, and little fresher and lighter, took off and went up to 5000 feet - smooth and calm air and watched the sun go down - absolutely marvelous sunset! Came back and landed. She said it was the best day she ever had. Was never nervous or scared. Lesson learned : on new passengers - have them hold an OPEN barf bag ready for filling! Some passengers may not give you much advance warning.
