Very commonly used in the helicopter world, for piston engines and turbines alike. I believe the term was first used on choppers. "Full Authority" refers to the idea that the pilot just asks for more or less power, and the computer does the rest, freely. The computer will adjust whatever parameter it pleases: mixture, intake quantity, RPM, pitch, or whatever. So, FADECs are "single lever" solutions, and they go farther than just electronic fuel injection. And of course, they have huge safety implications, therefore are extremely costly to certify, hence the price tag. By the way, there is one fabulous homebuilt helicopter, called the Rotorway Exec 162F, which has got a FADEC as standard. The manufacturers make their own engines, since they could not find anything acceptable in the market. The entire kit (helicopter with engine and FADEC) costs less than the FADEC option for a certified helicopter! Serge Vidal KR2 "Kilimanjaro Cloud" Paris, france FADEC = Full Authority Digital Engine Control. It's out there. The Cirrus SR series as well as some other new planes have it. It can be retrofited to some planes depending on how quickly it appears on the Type Certificates or developers are willing to tackle the years of paperwork and testing to satisfy the FAA for a Suplemental Type Certificate. My observation is that it appears to work well in flight and is well liked by the owners, but may be a bit immature for adverse conditions. I've watched several Cirrus run themselves out of batteries trying to start in moderately cool weather. Of course spending $15 - 20K to upgrade my two $20K airplanes just doesn't make financial sense. I'd spend that $$ buying another hanger and another plane instead. -Jeff On Wed, 13 Apr 2005 17:31:05 -0400 "Doug Rupert" writes: > Already do. I just re-checked the conversion manual and it isn't in there, perhaps on his website. I know I saw that sketch as well as the finished product somewhere. The picture showed a tube running back off the mount to the lower center firewall area where a piece of angle proceeded under the firewall and was attached to the bottom of the boat just aft of the firewall. Kudos to everyone involved in the design and Mark for Improvising as Mark put it. This seems to be a straight forward design that addresses not only the original question of the firewall separation but also how to spread the force along an even greater area of the boat in high G pull-ups as well as stress from nose gear along the whole frontal area during a hard landing. All initial indications pointed to a broken crank on the VW. We pulled the engine down and did not see anything unusual. I took the crank over to a well known machine shop in the area and had it magnafluxed and dye glowed. Zip, zilch, nada.... No cracks anywhere. Now we are at a total loss for any explanation of the vibration. We will recheck the prop for balance but I think it was too severe of vibration for that. Besides, once it was repaired, refinished, and balanced, it ran really smooth. I apologize for the false info. Now I have no idea what could have caused the problem. Both ignitions were checked with the same results on both. The heads and valves looked fine after disassembly. Carb functioned properly as far as acceleration. I am using a Revflow which has not given me any trouble in 200 hours. If anyone has any ides, I'm listening. We are putting the engine back together and I will fly it until the Corvair is ready. Hopefully whatever the anomaly was, with the rebuild (Again), it will be gone. I once seen a Case magneto (a tractor company that made aviation parts) that had carbon tracking in the distributor block which allowed a wrong plug to fire at the wrong time.
