Building? Jim; check your leg... I think Mark was pulling it. He served in the Air Force for years. As far as the Phantom, there were several variants through the VietNam era and if you're only looking at the underside of it, it would be impossible to tell which variant you have. But the profile is unmistakeable. This issue is something that is becoming a thing of the past. If you install the new AS504x airfoil and use the matching tail feather templates with the new recommended incidences, you too can have a stable flying KR. The proof is in the pudding. There is a new flight photo on the cover of my web page which I took this past Saturday morning from 5,000', while in a hands off level, right bank of my airport. Here is the link: http://mywebpage.netscape.com/n886mj/homepage.html Photos like this would be hard to accomplish in a stock KR with the original airfoils. I did four years in the Air Force, 2.5 of them at the Ramstein AB missile shop, about 150 feet from the end of the runway. I've seen (and heard) more than my share of F-4s and F-15s, but usually from the front, side, or rear. I'm not exactly a warbird expert, but I know a good picture when I see one. It would simply add weight. The primer and paint will seal the wood. Some folks who plan on keeping their KR outdoors will glass the boat thinking this will give them added protection. After replacing them, it was good as new again. Just a thought. I used 1.4 oz glass called deck cloth ( that's 1 point 4 oz) over all my wood as well as the KR cloth while laying up the wings and tail surfaces. I think the lightweight glass will resist the cracks you get in paint over time on the wood and I personally think the deck cloth gives a lighter layup over the KR cloth than trying to fill the weave with filler. Tony Bingelis also suggested going that route in one of his books, especially over the wood. I'm sure you could get a hundred different opinions on the subject but it's your football so you can play the game any way you want !! To: krnet@mylist.net Message-ID: <1f9.80ba58a.2f95c609@wmconnect.com> Content-Type: text/plain; charset="US-ASCII" Well, I guess all of you are wondering what I mean by time ran out. Well, I have been working on a KR2 that was badly damaged in Hurricane Ivan. I have been working on it since October. The damaged consisted of a broken vertical stab. crushed turtle shell, busted Canopy, RHU wing tip was cracked, and several scratches hear and there. The Hanger it was in came down on it and crushed it. The aircraft Fuselage and wings spars were not damaged But she still took a bad hit. The owner could not repair her so he sold it to me to rebuild her since I am an A&P. Well, as you all very well know building takes time. but in spit of some small set backs the vertical stab is finished, Rudder is repaired, Turtle shell rebuilt, and Canopy is on order from Todd's Canopies. I so much wanted to take it back to the air field and show Larry that his plane will fly again. But my friends time ran out. Larry passed away April 1st. Damn I miss him! For the passed two weeks I just cant seem to get anything done on the plane. All I seem to do now is look at it and think of what a great friend he was. Its hard to work with tears in your eyes. The only thing that seems to give me some comfort is knowing that Larry got to make two of his dreams come true. One of them was to live on an air field and build his own plane. It took Larry 15 years to build the KR2. So the next time you have to take a break from building or flying your KR remember Larry R. Pagle and all the other aviators that have gone before us. Dreams do come true, and N 61305 will fly again, and Larry now fly's with Eagles.
