According to the manual, it should take about 10 minutes. Yet, I can let it search for hours in a row, to no avail. Has anybody got a clue what could possibly be wrong? Then, if I can't make that thing work and I have to replace it, could somebody tell me what is the best value for money around? Are PDA-based solutions viable options? Check the time and date are correct also, otherwise the units sometimes can't match the received data with what it expects to find. Once a couple of satellites are tracked though for say 30 minutes, it should update the time and date exactly from the satellite received data. Afterwards it's not's so critical as it will choose those which are higher. By the way, I'm planning to fly my KR2 from Scotland down to France in the summer, to visit Brittany. I'll probably be in touch for advice. It won't be until September though I as I'm busy at work for the next few months - I make aircraft covers and everyone wants them during the summer months ! Anything you need, just shoot. I would like to understand something: during the INITIALIZATION process, should I get a bar-graph on the STATUS page, as shown in page 8 of the Manual? Because I don't. All I get is a lot of satellite positions (8 or so) but all shown in white. No grey, no black, and no bars. If I should get the bar-graph and I don't, then I would guess that I get only weak signals; therefore, the pre-amplifier is probably dead. They are: http://anywheremap.com/ Many choices here including in cockpit weather graphics, and I think this is the top of the line, however, a good bang for the buck is: http://www.flynavgps.com/products.shtml And, this is probably the one that I am going to choose due to the $ factor and the less costly and restrictive continuing subscription service. With these you also can get EFIS by purchasing a module and software. I think it is the way to go if you cannot afford or justify one of the big screen guys for your panel. See you in Mt. During the initialisation the receiver is collecting ephemeris data, a bit like fine tuning itself to the satellite. But it's not the strength of the signal itself that is important at this stage, it's more about the timing. It's a few years now since I worked professionally with GPS systems, but I remember that the data consists of the signals used to derive position for most of the time, then at set intervals it transmits data about itself which is used by the receiver to build up a picture of the satellites available and their position. You could say that this allows it to create a timetable of where the satellites are, and with it's initial position roughly known it can then start to check the received data and narrow down down it's location exactly. GPS is nothing more than an updated method of triangulation as used by mariners with a telescope, but it needs the empheris data to deduce this. It can take a lot longer than the published 2 minutes or so, I've sometimes had to wait three hours or more. A bit like trying to build up a timetable of buses by only standing at the side of the road and watching, and l think that's why initialisation times can also vary so much - you never get the right satellite when your waiting for it, and then three come at once ! What normally may be vented on a carby a) the float bowl. b) a vacuum operated slide like on a Bing. c) a diaphragm on a Mikuni. (there may be more, they are just the ones I'm familiar with) If the vent is not at the same pressure as the carby throat's intake then it will probably run lean or even stop fuel flow at high speeds. regards Barry Kruyssen Cairns, Australia RAA 19-3873 kr2@BigPond.com http://www.users.bigpond.com/kr2/kr2.htm ----- Original Message ----- From: Phillip Matheson To: KRnet Sent: Thursday, June 02, 2005 10:31 AM Subject: Re: KR> Ram Air systems Thanks for the replies BUT no one has been able to answer my question ? It did not have mixture control. It seemed to work OK. It scared me really bad once, and I replaced with an Ellison and never looked back. However, looking back, I think it was ice and I did not know it. Anyway, it worked with ram air. See you in Mt. I spent this afternoon running new lines from wheels to just inside the cockpit. I added fluid and put the airplane back together. Unfortunately, there was a light drizzle and I couldn't try them out. I hope to check them out in the morning. Film at 11:00............. I've also been working on my new RV wheelpants.
