I recall when I was learning to fly in Arizona in 57, my instructor said to dive with a dead engine until you reach about 10% above cruise speed and then pull out a little tighter than you normally would and the prop should start windmilling. John, I would go with the route that Mark J spoke of, but if they're already closed and you feel you need a backing plate, I would use 6061plate instead of 4130 to avoid having to worry about rust/corrosion as well as less weight.
