If you have coverage up to and including Indiana, then you're almost there. Mt.Vernon, Illinois is just 50 miles or so from the Indiana border. Just print out the airports you will be flying over or near. Anyone coming in from the east, the fuel is much cheaper at Carmi, located southeast of Mt.Vernon. I'd like to get some feedback from you on the practicality of what I'm thinking about. Here's the situation… I work in Scottsdale, AZ about 1 mile from the Scottsdale Airport. I am thinking about moving to Snowflake, AZ. Snowflake is about 160 miles from work by car. There is a small airport in Taylor (very close to Snowflake). I am guessing that the distance from the Taylor airport to Scottsdale is about 120 miles. Would it be practical to fly a KR to and from work 3 days a week? I would expect there to be $5K-$10K per year in fuel, maintenance, etc. Is this a reasonable expectation? Any ideas, suggestions, advice, or other feedback is greatly appreciated. You'll probably have to consider some more factors such as will you want to hanger the KR while you work? ; will you need an extra car to have at your destination airport for getting to work?, etc. Typically, we spend more time working on (maintenance, etc.) our aircraft than we do actually flying the thing. I think we all, at one time or another, dream about flying to work every day. If you really love flying, go for it! If you're just wanting to save time over driving, I'd give it some more thought. Since I fly over those areas a few of times a year, I have a pretty good idea the altitudes and terrain you would have to cover. Due to the winds you have at times at Taylor, I would recommend a tri-gear version. Due to the altitudes and sparse mountainous areas you will be flying over, I would not consider anything other than a C-85, C-90, or O-200 for a powerplant. This is not an area where airports are near your flight path, or forced landings are even a survivable option in some of those areas. -Jeff Scott -- Eric Vance wrote: I'm thinking about using a KR to commute to work 3 days a week. With the cost of motor fuel and aviation fuel this is exatly what I would do. The airport here where I live has refused year after year so build more hangers enen thoulgh when I came here 16 years ago there were 16 people on the waiting list and now there are 38 so I am going to sell my Cessna 152 and get an aircraft that is qualified under the sport pilot rules and has folding wings. I heard about one with a 912 Rotax engine (1500 Hrs TBO) and it uses auto fuel. I will trailer it back and forth from home to the airport and they will not make a dime off of me. Practical???? Hardly!!!!!Challenging? Absolutely.. Like Jeff, I have flown this part of the country from time to time in a C182RG with much altitude potential and have found it challenging to say the least. Summer winds and turbulence need to be respected. One thing I'm sure you already know if your exposed to SDL early in the morning is the very heavy kerosene burning traffic every day. You will be mixing it up with some very professional pilots and ATC controllers. One route that I might suggest would be Snowflake to Payson then the Tonto valley over Lake Roosevelt to the dam then down the gorge over the Salt river to Fountain Hills and then call into SDL from the east. I have flown this route and hope, some day to do it in my KR2S behind a Cont. O200. I thought it was no longer produced, and I got that impression from others, so it must be a common misconception. Now there's even an LSA (light sport aircraft) version that's even cheaper than the certified version, but stripped down so you can put your own alternator, carb, exhaust, or whatever on it. Right now they are working on a version that is somewhere under $15k, with all new parts. I talked to the project engineer, and he's been looking into electronic igntions for the thing, as well as cheaper carbs and even electronic fuel injection from folks like SMS. I spent all day yesterday sitting around the table with the president, chief engineer, crank expert, metallurgist, and several other guys. And yes, I did some more crank failure brain pickin' while I was there, and got a little smarter...
