Truly a cult classic from that era, came out in 1969 (the year I graduated from high school), and who knows how many thousands of VWs were brought back to life thanks to that book. I sure learned a lot helping three friends rebuild their burned-up van engine using that book and some common hand tools. Had the engine all the way down to split cases and had no idea that was what it looked like under the tin. Real mechanics like Langford might cringe or scoff at some of the backyard techniques that Muir uses, but hey- it works! By all means, if you can find that book, it's a classic. I just checked Amazon.com and they have used ones available in good condition starting at under five bucks. Such a deal! I checked my calendar at work and sent them all a message that I would not be there today. I cleaned up the shop, hung a little plastic and now the top of the wings are all white. And, yes, that does include the ailerons. If it had not been for my mantra, written below, I would have been still sanding on those ailerons and they came out better than the wings. So one more shot to get the other side of the wings and I am all finished painting with the exception of the cowling, if we can ever get that, the way we want it. I get a drumming in the cockpit which I'm told is from my exhausts (and black exhaust marks on the paint). In the next month or so I am going to get 2 bends, 60 degrees, and clamp to the exhaust pipes to see if this fixes the problem. I'm going to the hanger this evening and will take some photos of the exhaust.
