In addition, I have read many of the past discussions as well as speaking directly to several KR2 builders/flyers. With this being said, can anyone tell me, in a nutshell, what is the best "version" of the KR2 to build? For the record, I am considering a KR2S at approx. 16'6" length, widened at the cockpit enough for two adults(I don't know how wide is acceptable), Diehl Wings at approx. 24', retractable gear, extra fuel tanks, two control sticks and rudder pedals with throttle in the middle and a Dragonfly canopy that opens forward. I will try to keep the weight at approx. 640lbs. For performance, I am going to build based on the new Revmaster R-3000 at approx. 110hp which will bolt onto a R-2100 engine mount(according to Revmaster). I might even consider adding a PRSU for added performance. My desired specs are to have 1,000+ mile range and a cruise speed of 175-185 mph at 75%. Based on the infomation I have presented, am I "headed in the right direction". If not, can someone with experience point-me-in-the-right-direction.......... Put on a Diehl Fixed Conventional gear. The retract weighs more, will slow you down, and is dangerous. Use the 110HP Corvair instead of the Revmaster and I think you will have a much better installation. Make sure the turtle deck is wide enough at the top to clear your heads and head sets. Everything else sounds good. See you in Mt. The original KR-2 was designed just a little bit shorter than it should have been and this created a control problem. The KR2S is just a stretched out KR-2. Even if you want a single place the KR2 the S would be the one to build because the KR-1 is only 12 feet long and has she same problem. You can build the KR2S and just make the fuselage as narrow as you want it to be taking into consideration your size and how roomey you want the cockpit to be. Last weekend I flew up to the fly-in at the Alton, IL airport and there were bunches of people there. On leaving I asked for a low pass and was granted one. I was planning on heading home after I was done but the tower asked if I would like to make a couple more. Ultimately they cleared their traffic and my final one was at 190 mph about 10 feet above the runway with about 500 people watching. It was pretty cool. Today, I went to our airport where I was planning on displaying my plane but several people asked about how it flew and then this military plane from WWII did a couple of passes. Well, I couldn't resist so I called Ground and told them that the fun shouldn't be reserved for the big boys toys so I wanted to do a couple of passes with my little toy. They said sure and then moved me from the left runway to the right one so the crowd could have a full view. Again, I figured about 190 mph and 10 feet seemed logical. The tower cleared me for anything I wanted to do so I did pull-up's right after I cleared the tower on the right side then went to pattern altitude pretty darn quick turning 60 degree turns because the FAA was there at our flyin and they were watching. Sorry, no real turns like at the KR Gathering. Anyway. I've been having fun flying and the VW still lives. Don't forget about Oshkosh in 2007. 35 KR's for the 35th. Finish your airplanes. It is too much fun even in very controlled airspace. If not, get one of their free catalogs. There's more info there than can be put in an e-mail and make sense. The catalog has pictures. Use the new airfoil, fixed gear, build the canopy for the head room you need, and good luck on the 640 pounds !! At 650 pounds, look for 160 to 170 mph cruise with 100+ hp. What size pilot and passanger are you looking to stuff into the KR? Settle for 500 mile range. You're not going to want to set in it more than 3 hours anyway. Remember, you're building a 650 pound airplane with 100 hp. If you need more performance than mentioned above, you'd best look at another design. Expect too much and you'll be disappointed. Set some realistic goals and grin every time you go flying.
