You could argue it's just the EAA's opinion, but here it is: Q & A: Question of the Week Question for EAA Aviation Services: Given that the builder of a plans- built aircraft is listed as "manufacturer" of the aircraft, and that depending on equipment and powerplant installations, different aircraft built from the same plans may have speeds and gross weights that could place one example within and another example outside the limitations of the LSA rule, how is this situation taken into account in the rule? Would a more powerful, higher-gross weight example disqualify all previous examples that comply with the ruling? Answer: When it comes to amateur-built aircraft, each individual aircraft is unique in the FAA's eyes. Thus, the fact that one particular example of a design does or does not meet the LSA definition will not have any effect on other examples of that design. There are going to be many cases where some examples of a particular design will be eligible for operation by sport pilots while other examples of the same design are not. It will be up to the pilot to ascertain whether the particular airplane he/she wishes to fly as a sport pilot does indeed fit the LSA definition. ------------------------------------------------------ Mark Langford, Huntsville, AL N56ML at hiwaay.net see KR2S project N56ML at http://home.hiwaay.net/~langford ------------------------------ Message: 5 Date: Fri, 4 Feb 2005 08:01:23 -0500 From: VIRGIL N SALISBURY Subject: Re: KR> Spar dimensions To: krnet@mylist.net Message-ID: <20050204.080923.2068.0.virgnvs@juno.com> Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Check your plans, Virg Virgil N. Last year hats and tee shirts were in short supply if you did not request them on your pre-registration. The after hour forum was BYO Chair. Having snacks with your Soda is more fun. If anyone wants to start a collection for soda, I'll donate. I don't get to have Soda often, and appreciated the fact someone had plenty. Just as last year, I plan to fly. I may have to leave home on Tuesday or Wednesday just to make sure that I get there. The plane now has 122 hours on it and has run flawlessly on this trip. The only inncident was the ground loop due to the thinwalled rudder pedal assy I wrote about earlier. I spent two nights with Larry Flesner (Marion IL) and one night with Dan HEath (Columbia, SC) and got to look their planes over real well and have a nice visit with them. I also met with Larry Lipe - a KR wanabe...he has visited me before here in Georgia. I also spent time in Elizabethton TN where I went to flight school in the early 90's. A few old instructors and classmates were still there and a couple families from the mission days with my folks. It was an exciting trip covering eight states and about 3000 miles. I put about 25 hours on the plane and gave some rides. Learned a lot about weather and the conditions I feel comfortable and uncomfortable flying in. It was a good learning experience and a lot of fun. The KR2S flies great and handles great. The Corvair was worth every penny and much, much more. I hope to see more KRs out soon and telling me about their trips. Next on the schedule is to fly to to WW's in Edgewater FL - maybe tomorrow. Things to add to the plane... A glass Attitude Indicator would be nice - especially in low ceilings - transponder for flight following - and a wing leveler would help. But that cost $... I'm happy enough for now I guess just flying. Keep working hard. Thanks to all who provided a place to stay for their time and hospitality. My home is always open to you... Blessings... The >plane now has 122 hours on it and has run flawlessly on this trip. Blessings... Bill Clapp N41768 +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ O.K. Bill, you caught me in hours. After getting in some flight time today I shut down with 122.6 hours on the meter. I got in some formation time with a Cessna 150 and a J-4 cub. I was turning 1850 rpm flying with the C150 and 1400 rpm flying with the Cub, indicating 75mph. I wonder what my range would be at 1400 rpm !! The air today was awsome and I must have seen a thousand waterfoul. I was at 3500 feet for a bit and some were were even higher than that. I could see them against a clear sky. I guess they thought it was a good day to be on the wing also. :-) I enjoyed your visit. Glad you made it home. You'll pass me in hours this weekend. I'll be doing the annual on the Tripacer. It's a good thing you got out of southern Illinois when you did. It rained for two days following your departure. I have my Tripacer insurance with them (they are a broker) and have been extremely pleased with their service. I thought it might be of interest to some of you that are not knowledgable on the subject. Keep in mind that the KR with anything but a Lycombing or Continental will be nearly impossible to get insurance on. It's just the name of the game. Larry Flesner ---------- Hull Coverage - do you know what you have? Hull coverage is the protection you are buying for the actual value of the aircraft. It is comparable to the collision and comprehensive portion of your auto policy. Hull coverage is also the portion of insurance that will cover loss from theft or other damage depending on the type of coverage you have purchased. If the hangar collapses and crushes your aircraft, hull coverage will cover it. If someone steals your radios, hull coverage should cover them. Stated or Agreed Value. Aviation insurance is generally a "stated or agreed value" policy. That means if you have a total loss, the claims department will pay the stated value of the policy (minus your deductible). This is different from auto insurance. It is your obligation to value the aircraft at a reasonable value. Most underwriters will consider deviating from book values if you provide proof of value (POV). Proof is in the form of an equipment list including avionics, modifications, engine hours, airframe hours and interior/exterior condition. Usually the value limit is about 10% over book value before you need to provide proof of value. Types of coverage. There are basically two types of hull coverage with each aviation insurance company having their own variations. These coverages are: not-in-motion (NIM) and in-motion (IM). Not-in-motion is when the aircraft is parked and/or moving, but not under its own power. In-motion is when the engine or engines are actually moving the aircraft. Many companies do not include taxi operations under the not-in-motion part of the policy. That means if you have an accident while taxiing with a policy that does not include taxi operations, you will be responsible for repairs to the aircraft. If taxi is included, this coverage might be called not-in-flight. Remember, each company has its own definition of the hull coverage. Deductibles. Deductibles are the portion of the repair that the insured pays. In-motion deductibles are often higher (and sometimes substantially higher) than not-in-motion deductibles. Composite aircraft often have higher deductibles. These aircraft are not considered a mainstream repair and a local shop might not have the experience, tools or materials required to make the repair. A few companies have a different deductible for specific claims they have experienced. For example, one company has a $10,000 deductible for any claim that involves the landing gear (gear up, gear collapse, etc). Another company has a $5,000 deductible for any claim that involves a Pitts S2 canopy. Builder's risk. This coverage is generally for aircraft undergoing restoration or being custom or home built. Builder's risk typically requires the insured to provide a beginning value and a projected ending value for the policy year. This policy will pay the amount as established at the time of the loss. The maximum will be the estimated ending value as stated in the policy. This provides increasing coverage for your kit or restoration project as the value increases. You will need to keep receipts and records to substantiate the value at any particular time. TIP!Be sure to keep receipts and invoices for any changes to your aircraft that might change the hull value. In the event of a claim, be prepared to show these as proof for the loss. It is always a good idea to keep a copy of your equipment list, weight and balance (or records of the installations) in a secure location away from the airplane. This seems like extra work for the owner but it will simplify the claims process, be handy if selling the plane, and is always good information to have on hand. ------------------------------ _______________________________________________ See KRnet list details at http://www.krnet.org/instructions.html End of KRnet Digest, Vol 347, Issue 49 ************************************** ================================== ABC Amber Outlook Converter v4.20 Trial version ==================================
