You actually have two seperate systems there which are joined by one common mode of failure, the switch. If you changed the switch to a double pole switch with two seperate positive supplies and a seperate positive supply from the switch to each "system" you will in effect have a seperate ignition system for each pair of cylinders. I suppose the same goes for your secondary ignition. I don't know how well the plane will fly on two cylinders but I suppose that is better than none at all. If anything it will improve your glide slope! I plan on using an identical system on my corvair 3100 , only mine will have an extra pickup, an extra amplifier and an extra coil. The pickups will just have to be arranged 120 deg apart in stead of 180 and it should work just fine. I don't think I will even install a secondary ignition as you have because I think the KR will be able to stay in the air and maintain altitude just fine on four cylinders should I lose one ignition. Now to find a triple pole toggle switch if there is such a thing. To all, have a merry christmas and a prosperous new year. PS. Steve from Zambia is now living here in Port Elizabeth and has been in contact with me for the past three weeks. I had a brew with him yesterday and he says Hi to all on the list. As soon as he has his computer set up and an internet connection he will join us on the list. Then for some reason it seems to clear when I bring up the rpm (mag check) and while flying. I don't know if it's the increased airflow over the windows or cabin air leakage. Whatever, it doesn't seem to be a problem for me. Another solution would be to wear a mask that takes the moisture from your breath but then how cool would that be???? He used a vent from an old Volkswagen (sort of triangular shapes with a hose connection on one end, like a small vacuum cleaner attachment) to divert some air up to his canopy. I'm thinking about making something like that out of aluminum for my cabin heat inlet (plastic would melt immediately as hot as this thing is). As it is, I have a pretty hot stream of air aimed right at my hand on the stick, which certainly keeps my hands warm, but the passenger's still chilly. So I'll make some kind of diffuser that spreads the joy around. The split >flaps keep slowing me down as I cross the end of the runway and get in >ground effect, Mark Langford +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ I'll agree with Jeff Scott that your landing technique is the most comfortable and repeatable way to land a KR. It appears that every pilots approach is as different as their KR's. I'm generally not too concerned with my downwind speed although it's usually in the 140 mph range. I hate to loiter and wear out my engine in the pattern. When I'm abeam the numbers on downwind I try to be in the 110 to 120 range, slowing to 100mph on the turn to base. Once on the base leg I may bring down some speed brake or , most often, I'll throw the brake out on the turn to final. That brings the speed down to 90 really quick and I generally have to add a touch of power to keep the decent rate from getting too high. I then shoot for 80 mph at the 1/4 mile final point and 70 mph over the numbers. A slightly tail low wheel landing and then plant it on with forward stick. Once I can't hold the tail up I plant it with full back stick and can start braking. Like you, on shorter grass strips, I make the flare and then let it settle on in a nearly level wheel landing. The grass slows it pretty quickly and if done correctly, you can get some really smooth landings that impress the hangar bums watching. Speaking of landings, I made a flight yesterday and had my new digital camera along. I shot 9 minutes of video including the landing. One thing I noted that we have discussed before is visibility in landing. My camera was setting on top of the instrument panel with no riser so was looking across the top surface of the cowl. With my speed brake, the touchdown point was in site for the entire approach including the flare. My eye level is probably 6"'s above that so you can imagine the view I have on the approach. Adding drag to the KR for landings changes it from a tiger into a pussy cat !! Merry Christmas everyone.............. 'Twas the night before Christmas, and all through the shop, No resin was curing, not even a drop; The clamps were hung over the workbench with care, In hopes the spruce I ordered soon would be there; The old lady and I were nestled all snug in our bed, While the "I Hate Sanding" song played in my head; While wearing my Gathering tee shirt and cap, I had just settled down for a long winter's nap, When out on the lawn there arose such a clatter, I sprang from the bed to see what was the matter. Was it my neighbors playing one of their tricks?, Or could it be Yellow Freight with a shipment from Wicks? The landing lights shining on the new-fallen snow Gave the luster of mid-day to objects below, When I thought: "Could it be?. Yes" It was a small airplane, a KR-2S, With a big fat pilot, gloved hand on the stick, I knew in a moment it must be St. Nick, Stuffed with presents, and painted in white, Still not over gross, he must have built light, Speeding by in a high-speed pass, He shouted "Kraut get off of your ass!" "Langford and Jones, Bruce, Cooper, and Rainey, Heath, and the rest 'ya", "Get those planes done and come join Larry Flesner!" Now belly board down as he rounded the base, Full stop on my roof, done with such grace, He slid down my chimney, all covered with soot, Wearing his sanding mask, man this cats good. He was wearing a gathering shirt, two thousand and three, Dried epoxy on his jeans, and holes at the knee, There was something magical about him, and the way he flew in, Could not quite place it., Ahh, he had the big KR grin! He spoke not a word, but went straight to his work, Dropped a big bundle of spruce near the tree, by the hearth, A Corvair core motor, foam and glass, A new Sterba prop, this guy has class! Then laying his finger on the side his nose, And giving a nod, up the chimney he rose He gave the KR a quick preflight, Before he took off into the night, Did one high speed pass with a Marty Roberts pull up, This old man can fly just like a young pup! And away he flew, right out of sight, As I heard him exclaim "Merry Christmas to all, and I REALLY HATE SANDING!!" I am a builder in NH of a plans built KR2. The airplane was started by me 10 or so years ago and has met the ups and downs so common to us all. Plans bought before the stretch version; modified to add two feet aft of cockpit and 2" forward of the origional firewall. The concept is of a single person ac so there will be a radio stack below the instrument panel between my legs. I had holes drilled in the panel for IFR instruments but have since filled them back in. Plain VFR now. The ac is well along (90% rule) on fixed gear and has a HAPI VW on the nose with a wooden (Wranke I think) prop. Controlled engine start was today as we are having very non-NH weather. Wings are Diehl skins. Modern electronic ignition systems do not just "quit" as in days gone past, if it is a quality system. You can use an external GM crank sensor, or cam sensor, and install a 3 tiered trigger system, then have 3 GM late model capacitive coils which is what they use on the Aerovee VW engine, and trigger each one individually, hooked up to the 2 companion cylinders so that one is firing on the exhaust stroke while the other is firing on compression stroke. The only problem with that type of simple system is it is fixed timing, unless you figure out how to incorporate an ignition module. Since caps, rotors, and normal use distributor shafts don't fail in use suddenly, but rather deteriorate slowly over time, a pilot will notice they are wearing out before failure. Therefore, that is ALOT of engineering to go through for very little pay off, and will definitely hurt peak performance. Most sudden failures of ignition systems today are actually systems that have been ignored, and driven with for some time, until the vehicle will not operate any more. From my observation here, KR pilots are ALOT more conscientious and will abort takeoffs and determine the problem, instead of flying anyway, and "worry about it later" attitude. If it makes a difference I will be flying behind a single ignition system, of electronic type, and vacuum advance distributor, and expect with regular maintenance and attention to have the same reliability as I have in my driveway...
